教你如何從臉部判斷
Think back to your last visit to a general doctor; what are the first things he looks at?
He asks you to stick out your tongue, he examines your eyes and takes an almost kinkyinterest in your mouth and ears. All this is not to follow some protocol but to read the signs ofyour body’s health. Visual diagnosis has been followed through the ages; this is because yourface is the most illuminating part of your body and provides great insights into the functioningand status of your organs. This is because our body is a coherent machine where all the partswork in symphony and harmony, with the same energy flowing through our veins. Let ustake a look at what can be ascertained by examining the face。
Face and Body: Connections
Why your face is such a good mirror of your general health –
1. Your mouth is the entry to the digestive system and hence provides the basic diagnosisof your digestive tract。
2. Your nose is the ingress to the respiratory system and thus is a fine place to begin tounderstand your respiratory health。
3. The eyes are directly connected to the optic nerve, the brain and the nervous system, which also explains our heavy reliance on our sense of vision。
4. The ears send sound signals to the brain, making up the auditory system。
5. Did you think ‘rosy cheeks’ were just part of a poem? The colour of your cheeks actuallyrepresents the health of your lungs。
6. Dark circles and bad skin under the eyes reflect poor kidney health。
7. The condition of your forehead reflects the condition of your bladder。
Symptoms, their meanings and solutions
Forehead acne
First connection, the forehead reflects the general condition of your digestive system. Soacne in this region is a sign that you’re not really pampering your stomach and such. We mightthink of pampering as filling it up with rich foods and corpulent amounts of alcohol, but to thebody the exact opposite is true. Too much oil or grease is what causes the acne, and thebooze doesn’t help either. Healthier food habits, like a high-fibre and low-carb diet will set thisright。

Dark circles and under-eye bags
Dark circles and under-eye bags, though mostly hereditary, do sometimes appear all of asudden or get worse than before. This is a clear indication of deteriorating health. Dark circlesand bags under your eyes are known to be linked to the kidneys. Discolouration in this areacould mean that the toxins are building up in your kidneys, or even general dehydration. Thiscould be a result of excessive alcohol or caffeine consumption. On the other hand, it couldalso be the result of certain deficiencies such as vitamin B12 or Iron。
Congested cheeks
One of the most common complaints about the face is white spots near the cheeks. This isbecause these spots can result from simple reasons such as bad cosmetics or unclean pillows. This doesn’t mean that you can dismiss them lightly because this part of your face alsocorresponds to the health of your lungs. So the spots can be indicative of a respiratoryproblem, such as in smokers or asthmatics. This is because they are prone to breaking ofcapillaries in the cheeks. This is not as dramatic as it sounds so don’t freak out. A visit to adermatologist should solve it。
Moles
Ever heard people complimenting “that sexy mole”? Apart from being kind-of attractivewhen in the right places, a mole is not always bad even from your health point of view. Researchhas actually found that people with more moles have stronger bones and are less likely to sufferosteoporosis. The benefits are not limited to the bones. People with moles are known to havehealthier eyes and even a more well-functioning heart. So don’t curse your moles. If you havethem, feel blessed。

International brands join list of bacteria-tainted ice creams
Mister Donut, an American donut chain, and Baskin Robbins, a popular international chainof ice cream parlors, said yesterday that they have taken some of their ice-cream products offthe shelves after a quality inspection found excessive levels of bacteria in them。
Three other blacklisted companies, Dairy Queen, Donut King and Cold Stone, however, saidtheir products were safe。
Mister Donut Shanghai Co Ltd said it has suspended sales of its vanilla flavor ice creamafter receiving the test results from Shanghai's consumer protection commission。
"Mister Donut has double checked the cleaning and disinfection process of its stores andwill not resell the ice cream until the company can make sure there is no problem in theoperation process," it said in a statement。
The donut chain has more than 20 stores in the city。
Baskin Robbins has taken the cheese-taste ice cream off the shelves and enhanced itssterilization process after the check, Shanghai Songqing Catering Management Co Ltd, whichoperates Baskin Robbins stores in the city, said in a statement yesterday。
The company has taken measures such as disinfecting kitchenware (knives, cups andstainless steel scoops) more frequently to reduce the possibility of bacterial infection。
DQ, Donut King and Cold Stone said their ice-cream products had passed third-party testson many occasions, with test reports attached to their statements yesterday。
Shanghai Cold Stone Co Ltd said its original flavor ice cream, which was listed assubstandard by the commission, passed an inspection by a third party but has still asked itsstores to oversee the temperature of ice cream more strictly and step up disinfection。
DQ and Donut King made similar announcements。
Ice creams of these popular brands were found to contain excessive bacteria, some atan alarming level, the consumer protection commission said on Wednesday. The amount ofbacterial colonies found in Cold Stone's original flavor ice cream reached 32,000 CFU (colony-forming units) per milliliter, compared with the national limit of 25,000 per ml, the commissionsaid。
"It is so frightening to learn that these popular brands are not hygienic. I may have toquit eating ice cream for some time," said Una Yu, who works at the Expo Museum and hasoften bought ice creams from these brand outlets。

研究稱(chēng)有機(jī)食品并非"更健康"
Eating organic food will not make you healthier, according to researchers at StanfordUniversity, although it could cut your exposure to pesticides.
They looked at more than 200 studies of the content and associated health gains of organicand non-organic foods.
Overall, there was no discernible difference between the nutritional content, although theorganic food was 30% less likely to contain pesticides.
Critics say the work is inconclusive and call for more studies.
The research, published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, looked at 17 studiescomparing people who ate organic with those who did not and 223 studies that compared thelevels of nutrients, bacteria, fungus or pesticides in various foods - including fruits, vegetables, grains, meats, milk and eggs.
None of the human studies ran for longer than two years, making conclusions about long-termoutcomes impossible. And all of the available evidence was relatively weak and highlyvariable - which the authors say is unsurprising because of all the different variables, likeweather and soil type, involved.
Fruit and vegetables contained similar amounts of vitamins, and milk the same amount ofprotein and fat - although a few studies suggested organic milk contained more omega-3.
Organic foods did contain more nitrogen, but the researchers say this is probably due todifferences in fertilizer use and ripeness at harvest and is unlikely to provide any healthbenefit.
Their findings support those of the UK's Food Standards Agency, which commissioned a reviewa few years ago into organic food claims.
Prof Alan Dangour, of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, who carried out thatwork, said: "Consumers select organic foods for a variety of reasons, however this latestreview identifies that at present there are no convincing differences between organic andconventional foods in nutrient content or health benefits.
"Hopefully this evidence will be useful to consumers."
Dr Crystal Smith-Spangler, the lead author of the latest review, said there were many reasonswhy people chose to eat organic, including animal welfare or environmental concerns.
"Some believe that organic food is always healthier and more nutritious. We were a littlesurprised that we didn't find that.
"There isn't much difference between organic and conventional foods, if you're an adult andmaking a decision based solely on your health."
But the Soil Association said the study was flawed.
"Studies that treat crop trials as if they were clinical trials of medicines, like this one, exaggerate the variation between studies, and drown out the real differences.
"A UK review paper, using the correct statistical analysis, has found that most of thedifferences in nutrient levels between organic and non-organic fruit and vegetables seen inthis US study are actually highly significant."
A Department of Health spokeswoman said: "Evidence has not yet emerged that there arenutritional benefits from eating organically produced foods compared to conventionallyproduced foods. We will continue to review research on this subject."
The study was funded by Stanford University.
