Shiloh: A Requiem
by Herman Melville
Skimming lightly, wheeling still,
The swallows fly low
Over the field in clouded days,
The forest-field of Shiloh——
Over the field where April rain
Solaced the parched ones stretched in pain
through the pause of night
That followed the Sunday fight
Around the church of Shiloh——
The church so lone, the log-built one,
That echoed to many a parting groan
And natural prayer
Of dying foemen mingled there——
Foemen at morn, but friends at eve——
Fame or country least their care:
(What like a bullet can undeceive!)
But now they lie low,
While over them the swallows skim,
And all is hushed at Shiloh.

Shedding Skin
by Harryette Mullen
Pulling out of the old scarred skin
(old rough thing I don't need now
I strip off
slip out of
leave behind)
I slough off deadscales
flick skinflakes to the ground
Shedding toughness
peeling layers down
to vulnerable stuff
And I'm blinking off old eyelids
for a new way of seeing
By the rock I rub against
I'm going to be tender again

Shooting Rats at the Bibb County Dump
by David Bottoms
Loaded on beer and whiskey, we ride
to the dump in carloads
to turn our headlights across the wasted field,
freeze the startled eyes of rats against mounds of rubbish.
Shot in the head, they jump only once, lie still
like dead beer cans.
Shot in the gut or rump, they writhe and try to burrow
into garbage, hide in old truck tires,
rusty oil drums, cardboard boxes scattered across the mounds,
or else drag themselves on forelegs across our beams of light
toward the darkness at the edge of the dump.
It's the light they believe kills.
We drink and load again, let them crawl
for all they're worth into the darkness we're headed for.

Shore Counter
by Aaron Fogel
Friendless, with an intimation of islands,
The merchant set up shop on shore.
He had no jovial manner and made no eye
Contact with customers but gazed——
They might be birds or nations——at white
Forms out there in the offing. People preferred
Buying from him to pretending to be hearty
And earthy——what you have to do with some shopkeepers.
He was the lower-middle class transfinite——
Handing you something to eat and taking the cash
With indifference like the unpainted eyes
Of the oldest classical sculptures of their own erosion,
The self (imagine this) no longer tainted,
The blue long gone because of weather.

Rape
by Sondra Upham
I wake to a knife
on the back of my neck,
a man's voice low
in my ear. What I am told to do,
I do. Still
the moon lights my room.
The freight of his chest
fixes me to the rough, wood floor.
His breath
brags down my throat
into my lungs, and I pray
for my soul.
I make of my body a bunker:
when he enters,
he does not touch me.
I am clean as rain.
