Changgan Song
Li Bai
With my hair first covering
my forehead, I plucked the flowers
in front of the door, and you came
on the bamboo horse, playing
green plum catch
around the bed. Living
in the same Changgan Lane,
young, we were innocent.
At fourteen, I married you.
Still too shy, I hung my head low
to the wall and turned back
only at your repeated calls.
At fifteen, my face lit up
in your company, I was willing
to have my ashes mixed with yours.
Your were as faithful
as the legendary lover standing steady
against the rising tide. Little did I think
I would mount the Husband-Watching-Plateau.
At sixteen, you traveled far away,
sailing across the Qutang Gorge,
the Yanyu Crag jutting out
so dangerously in the summer
and monkeys crying sadly
in the high mountains.
The footprints you left, step
by step, by our door, were moss-covered,
the moss too deep
to be swept away, leaves falling
in the early autumn wind.
Now the butterflies, yellow
in September, fly in pairs
over the grass in the west garden.
The scene breaks my heart,
I grow old worrying about you.
Oh when you are coming back
through the Three Ba Area, write a letter home.
I will come out to meet you
as far as Changfengsha.
Ballads of a Merchant's Wife II
Brought up while young in inner room,
I knew nor wind nor dust that rose.
Since you became my dear bridegroom,
I've leaned on Sands from where wind blows.
In the fifth moon south wind is high,
I know you're sailing the river down;
In the eighth moon west wind comes nigh,
I think you'll leave the river town.
I'm grieved to see you come and go:
We sever longer than we meet.
When will you come home? Let me know!
To cross the waves my dream is fleet.
Last night a violent wind blew,
Breaking the trees by riverside.
So dark the boundless waters grew!
Where could your roving ship abide?
I'd ride upon a cloud-like steed
To meet you east of River Green
Like two love birds amid the reed
Or kingfishers on silken screen.
I pity my fifteen-odd years,
Like blooming peach my face is warm.
But I'm a merchants wife in tears,
Who worries over wind and storm.
At Peace
Li Bai
Didn’t know night had fallen—flowers too—fallen all over me.
Sobering up now.
Up and take a stroll, along the gleaming stream.
Not a bird out, hardly anyone, just the moon and me. The moon. And me.
