There was a sturdy ram with a pair of thick horns upright on its head.
It strutted about proudly and saw a fence built with bamboo and wood in front, which blocked its way. It cast a sidelong glance at the fence, lowered its neck and lunged at the fence, hoping to knock it down. The fence remained intact but the ram injured its own horns.
If it had not injured its horns, the ram would have persisted obstinately in butting against the fence, even against the spokes of a wheel until it bled with a fractured skull.
As a result, with its horns caught in the fence, the ram could neither advance nor retreat but bleat helplessly.
In the dense mountain forest, there lived herds of stout and strong red deer. They were alert and suspicious animals and ran about with agility. It was very difficult for people to catch them. When some people came to the mountains to hunt, they would
first seek for yu (supervisor of the mountain forests in ancient times), request him to be their guide, and inquire in detail about the red deer's pattern of activities and their usual haunts. Only with full preparations would they carry their knives and arrows, lead their hounds and enter the dense forest for the siege. As a result, all the red deer dashed into their ring of encirclement, and one by one fell dead under the rainfall of arrows.
But when some other people came to the mountains to hunt, they would not first seek for yu to fmd out the situation, but rushed rashly into the forest. As a result, after a busy day they couldn't find a single trace of red deer and could only return de jectedly with empty hands.

The coachman's wife had never seen Yan Zi before and wished to have a look at him. She peeped from behind the door. "Ah,here comes Yan Zi!" She got the impression that though he was the prime minister of the State of Qi, he talked and behaved with great modesty.
But her own husband? Haughty and arrogant, he sat under the big canopy driving the carriage for Yan Zi, yet considering himself unexcelled in the world. She was much ashamed of her husband.

"Yan Zi isless than 6 chi (Chinese unit of length, 1/3 metre)

treats people prudently when he goes out. But what about you? You are fully 8 chi tall, but you forget that you are only a coachman.
By the side of the prime minister, you dare to look so cocky, consider yourself always in the right, and brandish the whip to urge the horse on in utter complacency. You are so immodest that I can't live with you any longer."
Upon hearing his wife's words, the coachman felt much ashamed. Thereafter he became very careful and prudent in doing things and treated people modestly.
