  I think that the commonest mistake is treating it like school.

  When I went to university, most of the people around me came straight from school (or maybefrom taking a maximum of a year out). They had the mentality of children who were beingforced to do something. They skipped classes, sat at the back talking during lectures, didn't dothe reading! They were still in "school" mode, thinking that the point was to get through it withthe least effort.

  For my part, I was there after working in a beer pump factory for three years. I knew that I hadgone to university because I wanted to learn. I wasn't there because my teachers at schoolmade me go, or my parents made me go, or because my friends were all going. I had chosen togo. I think that this put me in a different frame of mind. I read all the set texts, I went to allthe lectures and seminars. Don't get me wrong I had fun too, but I was there to learn and Ilearnt a lot. I enjoyed it. It was rewarding to learn about the authors , their works, the critic'sopinions etc.

  對于我這個在啤酒泵廠工作三年后上大學的人來說,我知道上大學是因為我想學習,不是因為學校老師讓我去,或父母讓我去,或因為朋友都上大學。我自己選擇上學,我認為是這一點使我擁有了不同的想法。我讀所有規(guī)定的文本材料,我去上所有的課聽所有講座。不要誤會,我過得也很開心,但我到那兒是去學習的,我學到了很多東西,很享受。了解作者和他們的作品以及批評家的觀點等都使我有所收獲。

  The kids around me thought that reading six novels for a module and going to a lecture for eachnovel was too much work. They would read one novel, go to the lecture for that one and writetheir essay on that one book. They thought that they were really clever to work out an easierway of doing it. But they were tricking themselves out of an education!

  我身邊的孩子們以為為了一個模塊讀6本小說、為了一本小說要上一節(jié)的學業(yè)太繁重了。他們會讀一本小說,聽關于這本小說的課,然后寫下這本書的隨筆。他們以為自己真的很聰明,找到了完成作業(yè)更簡便的方法,但他們其實是自欺欺人,耽誤了學業(yè)!

  Focussing too hard on getting good grades.

  過度關注取得好成績。

  "I won't switch majors yet... let's stick it out for another year".

  “我不會改專業(yè)…再忍耐一年”。

  Not pursuing out-of-class learning interests because of item #1.

  因為第一條所以沒有課外學習的興趣。

  Not doing side projects because of item #1.

  因為第一條所以沒有別的計劃。

  "I'm too busy because of school."

  “上學太忙了”。

  Not taking advantage of all the free stuff that universities have.

  沒有利用大學一切免費資源。

  Defining success only in terms of accomplishments.
