My family
Born into a country family twenty-four years ago in western Guangdong, I have a big family of seven people, my grandparents, my parents, me and my younger sister and brother.
My grandparents: Earlier before I finished primary school, both my parents had left behind the farm work to earn our tuition fee in the big city, so I was raised up by my grandparents. Actually, I was delivered by my grandmother in our old mud-brick house! She was “sold” to my family at around twelve and work hard to support the family ever since. If it’s not her strictness on me, I might not have been able to sit here keyboarding this article in English because I was too busy working overtime in some factory or plotting some crime with my childhood “sworn followers”, so I feel deeply grateful for her. The liveliest memories with my grandpa were when he herded the yellow cattle deep in the mountains that surround our village and carried me along at the cattle back. He also knows herbal medicine well. And when he searched the mountains for his cattle or herbs for the family or the villagers, he would always manage to bring back delicious berries grown in the wild for us kids.
My parents: Before they went out to work, my parents farmed several acres of land for rice and other emblements. I also tried to help during busy season, even though I was too young to contribute too much labor work, the villagers would praised that I was a sensible child, I was very happy! But farming had low income, and they have three children’s tuition to pay, so they decided to take a chance in the big city more than ten years ago. It’s not easy to make a living in the city especially for those who can’t read very well and don’t have good social relationships, so they work very hard from early morning to midnight and live frugally so that I and my sister can go to college.
My sister and brother: My sister came to the world two years later than me, followed by my brother five years later, so there was a time when we were studying in the same school! And I can take an elder brother’s responsibility to care for them. But the arrow of time is hard to catch; now my sister is having her first interview and my brother become the headache of the family. Instead of going straightly to high school, my brother went to a local technical school after graduated from junior high school and became addicted to online games. I always blame myself for this because it was me who introduced him to computer, though my intention was to teach him one of the basic skills to survive in this society.
Every time when I counter ups and downs and wonder about the meaning of life, I would think of my family, it’s them who give me strength and make me feel safety.
