August (Excerpt)
by Charles Dickens
There is no month in the whole year, in which nature wears a more beautiful appearance thanin the month of August. Spring has many beauties, and May is a fresh and blooming month, but the charms of this time of year are enhanced1) by their contrast with the winter season.August has no such advantage. It comes when we remember nothing but clear skies, greenfields, and sweet-smelling flowers—when the recollection2) of snow, and ice, and bleak3)winds, has faded from our minds as completely as they have disappeared from the earth — andyet what a pleasant time it is! Orchards and cornfields4) ring with the hum of labours; treesbend beneath the thick clusters of rich fruit which bow their branches to the ground; and thecorn5), piled in graceful sheaves, or waving in every light breath that sweeps above it, as if itwooed6) the sickle7), tinges8) the landscape with a golden hue9). A mellow softnessappears to hang over the whole earth; the influence of the season seems to extend itself tothe very wagon, whose slow motion across the well-reaped field, is perceptible10) only to theeye, but strikes with no harsh sound upon the ear.

On Achieving Success
We cannot travel every path. Success must be won along one line. We must make our business the one life purpose to which every other must be subordinate1).
I hate a thing done by halves2). If it be right, do it boldly. If it be wrong, leave it undone.
The men of history were not perpetually3) looking into the mirror to make sure of their own size. Absorbed in their work they did it. They did it so well that the wondering world sees them to be great, and labeled4) them accordingly.
To live with a high ideal is a successful life. It is not what one does, but what one tries to do, that makes a man strong.“Eternal vigilance5),” it has been said,“is the price of liberty.” With equal truth it may be said,“Unceasing effort is the price of success.” If we do not work with our might, others will; and they will outstrip6) us in the race, and pluck the prize from our grasp. Success grows less and less dependent on luck and chance. Self-distrust is the cause of most of our failures. The great and indispensable7) help to success is character. Character is acrystallized8) habit, the result of training and conviction9). Every character is influenced byheredity10), environment and education. But these apart, if every man were not to be a great extent the architect of his own character, he would be a fatalist11), and irresponsible creature of circumstances. Instead of saying that man is a creature of circumstance, it would be nearer the mark to say that man is the architect of circumstance. From the same materials one man builds palaces, another hovel12). Bricks and mortar13) are mortar and bricks, until the architect can make them something else. The true way to gain much is never to desire to gain too much. Wise men don’t care for what they can’t have.
You’re a Beautiful Person
I wish that I could tell every person that I meet that he or she is a beautiful person--and havethem believe it. I wish I could look them in the eyes and tell them of their beauty and have themaccept the words for what they truly are--the truth, plain and simple.
You and I both know that most people will deny their beauty, expressing what they feel ismodesty or humility. It's easier for us to be told that we're talented or intelligent--our ownbeauty is something that we don't want to face.
You could help me to convince people of their innate beauty. You could agree with me in aneffort to reinforce the message. You could give a few specifics to illustrate just what we'retalking about when we say the person is beautiful. You could reassure the person that I'm notsaying it to flatter or to try to win the person over or get something out of the person, butjust trying to express in words the beauty I see when I look into that person's eyes and seethe human being there, the person who gets happy and hurt and who laughs and who cries.
You can help me by reminding the person that beauty isn't about comparing ourselves withothers, but about the part of us that shines when we love others and love life. It's not allphysical and it's not all spiritual, but a tender combination of all that we are.
