The secret of happiness
Once there lived a king of great strength and wealth.Yet he was not happy. He told his servants to find him things to make him happy, but each came back saying,"Noting in the world can match the wonderful things you have already."Then in that land, there lived a poor man with a patch over one eye and a crutch to help him walk.Although he had little,he was always happy. When the king heard of this,he asked the man to teach him his secret.
"I never push." the man replied,"and I never rush. Most of all,I never wish for too much."Then he smiled and was gone.
If you would make a man happy,do not add to his possessions but subtract from his desires.
Life throws a brick at your head
A young and successful executive was traveling down a neighborhood street, going a bit toofast in his new Jaguar. He was watching for kids darting out from between parked cars andslowed down when he thought he saw something.
As his car passed, one child appeared, and a brick smashed into the Jag's side door. Heslammed on the brakes and spun the Jag back to the spot from where the brick had beenthrown.
He jumped out of the car, grabbed some kid and pushed him up against a parked car, shouting, "What was that all about and who are you? Just what the heck are you doing?"
Building up a head of steam, he went on"That's a new car and that brick you threw is gonnacost a lot of money. Why did you do it?"
“Please, mister, please, I'm sorry. I didn't know what else to do!”pleaded the youngster.
"It's my brother," he said. "He rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can't lifthim up.
Sobbing, the boy asked the executive, "Would you please help me get him back into hiswheelchair? He's hurt and he's too heavy for me."
Moved beyond words, the driver tried to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat. Helifted the young man back into the wheelchair and took out his handkerchief and wiped thescrapes and cuts, checking to see that everything was going to be okay.
"Thank you, sir. And God bless you," the grateful child said to him. The man then watchedthe little boy push his brother to the sidewalk toward their home.
It was a long walk backs to his Jaguar... a long, slow walk. He never did repair the side door.He kept the dent to remind him not to go through life so fast that someone has to throw abrick at you to get your attention.
Life whispers in your soul and speaks to your heart. Sometimes, when you don't have the timeto listen... Life throws a brick at your head.
It's your choice: Listen to the whispers of your soul or wait for the brick!
Do you sometimes ignore loved ones because your life is too fast and busy leaving them towonder whether you really love them?
Get a thorough understanding of oneself
In all one's lifetime it is oneself that one spends the most time being with or dealing with. But itis precisely oneself that one has the least understanding of. When you are going upwards in lifeyou tend to overestimate yourself. When you are going downhill you tend to underestimateyourself. It's likely that you think it wise for yourself to know your place and stay aloof fromworldly wearing a mask of cowardice, behind which the flow of sap in your life will be retarded.
To get a thorough understanding of oneself is to gain a correct view of oneself and be a soberrealist—aware of both one's strength and shortage. You may look forward hopefully to thefuture but be sure not to expect too much, for ideals can never be fully realized. You may becourageous to meet challenges but it should be clear to you where to direct your efforts. Toget a thorough understanding of oneself needs self-appreciation. Whether you liken yourselfto a towering tree or a blade of grass, whether you think you are a high mountain or a smallstone, you represent a state of nature that has its own reason of existence. If you earnestlyadmire yourself you'll have a real sense of self-appreciation, which will give you confidence. As soon as you gain full confidence in yourself you'll be enabled to fight and overcome anyadversity.
To get a thorough understanding of oneself also requires doing oneself a favor when it'sneeded. In time of anger, do yourself a favor by giving vent to it in a quiet place so that youwon't be hurt by its flames; in time of sadness, do yourself a favor by sharing it with yourfriends so as to change a gloomy mood into a cheerful one; in time of tiredness, do yourself afavor by getting a good sleep or taking some tonic. Show yourself loving concern about yourhealth and daily life. Unless you know perfectly well when and how to do yourself a favor, youwon't be confident and ready enough to resist the attack of illness.
To get a thorough understanding of oneself is to get a full control of one's life. Then one willfind one's life full of color and flavor.
