  The Great Wall

  長(zhǎng)城

The Chinese Great Wall is the great construction in the history of human civilization. It was praised as the Eighth Wonder of the World many years ago.

The construction of the Great Wall began from the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring Period (770BC-221BC).

After unification of China by Qinshihuang (the first emperor in China), Qinshihuang ordered his people to build a new wall on the base of the original one in large scale.

Subsequent dynasties continued to strengthen and extend the wall. The most part of the extant wall from Shanhaiguan in Pohai to Jiayuguan in Gansu Province were built by Ming dynasty (1386–1644AC).

The Great Wall is 7.8 meters high, 6.5 meters across at its base and 5.8 meters at its top. There is a watchtower rise to about 12 meters every one hundred meters.

Dating back to the Spring and Autumn Period, more walls were put up to defend the borders of the different kingdoms and nomad nationalities in the northern China. The Great Wall had become the dominant fortification for Han people since Qin Dynasty.

In fact, the walls didn't resist the attacks of the dangerous enemies. Ming Dynasty tried their best to renovate the wall, regardless of the expense to humans in effort, time and financial well-being, but ironically, the leader of Qing not only led his army to crack the defense of the wall, but also took the emperor Yingzong of Ming Dynasty alive in 1499AC.

At any rate, the Great Wall is just a wall which cannot protect a nation. Interestingly, the most prosperous Tang Dynasty was one of dynasties which never renovated the wall.

The Great Wall is the symbol of the Chinese civilization. It is the fruit of the Chinese nation's wisdom. Now, the Great Wall is the famous scenic spot attracting tens of thousands of tourists.

There is a well-known Chinese saying on the wall, "He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man". The Great Wall was selected on the list of the World Heritage in 1987.

"He who has not climbed the Great Wallis not a true man" Mao Zedong.

If visiting Beijing it is mandatory to seeThe Wall. But which part do you want to go to? Busy Badaling, scenicMutianyu, hike along Jinshanling or see wild HuanghuaCheng or Jiankou?

The Great Wall of China was built over2,000 years ago, by Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China during the Qin(Ch'in) Dynasty (221 B.C - 206 B.C.). In Chinese the wall is called"Wan-Li Qang-Qeng" which means 10,000-Li Long Wall (10,000 Li = about5,000 km).

After subjugating and uniting China from seven Warring States, the emperorconnected and extended four old fortification walls along the north of Chinathat originated about 700 B.C. (over 2500 years ago). Armies were stationedalong the wall as a first line of defense against the invading nomadic HsiungNu tribes north of China (the Huns). Signalfires from the Wall provided early warning of an attack.

The Great Wall is one of the largest building construction projects evercompleted. It stretches across the mountains of northern China, winding northand northwest of Beijing. It is constructed of masonry, rocks and packed-earth.It was over 5,000 km (=10,000 Li) long. Its thickness ranged from about 4.5 to9 meters (15 to 30 feet) and was up to 7.5 meters (25 feet) tall.

During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the Great Wall was enlarged to 6,400kilometers (4,000 miles) and renovated over a 200 year period, withwatch-towers and cannons added.

BADALING: 70km northwest from Beijing. Open6am - 10pm Summer & 7am - 6pm winter. CableCar is available Y80 one way or Y100 return. This Ming fortification section ofthe wall is heavily renovated. If you read travel books or travelbrochures then this is mentioned as the most popular section of the wall. Alsonote popular means swarming with tourists. Popular also means tour companieslove it. If you do want to visit this section then get there very earlyin the morning, especially on the weekend or come in Winter and enjoy. Thescenery is impressive with the wall snakeing off over the hills in thedistance. The two sections of the wall go in either direction, left or right, from the main entrance. Walk as far as you can in either direction and you willbe rewarded by seeing the breathtaking veiw of seeing the wall winding over thehills.

MUTIANYU: 90km north of Beijing. Open6.30am - 6pm. (Winter 7.30am - 6pm.) This the first cable car you willencounter and it wil take you to tower 6. Walk on further & you canbuy tickets for the other chair lift that is enclosed and goes to a highersection of the wall - tower 14.

From tower 14 you can continue walking upto tower 21. The section tower 18 to tower 20 is quite steep with numeroussteps. There is now also a new part of the Mutianyu that has recently opened up- the new section tower 21 to 23 offers some great views.

Check opening times for the chairlifts assometimes they don't start operating until 8.30am. It is best to get to thewall early when it is not too crowded. Also there is only a small car park andyou might find your transport has to park down the hill which means you willhave a bit of a walk to get to the entrance.

This 3km section of the wall is not as busyas Badaling. The wall is built on the older Qi dynasty section (AD550-77) and it not as heavily restored as the Badaling section. The scenery iswonderful with crumbling outposts seen on the hills in the back ground. Thereare also watch towers built into the wall itself. If you are there in Octoberyou get to see the autumn colours of the trees in the surrounding countryside.

When you come to tower 6 there is eitherthe option of a ski lift style cable car down or a sliding ride.

  SIMATAI: 110km northeastof Beijing.

Simatai was closed from June 2010 and hasrecently reopened but some sections are still closed - You can only visit theEastern section, towers 1 - 10. You can not do the hike from Simatai toJinshanling as the area between these two sections is closed to the public.

The small villages surrounding Simatai havealso been redeveloped and this area has been renamed as Gubei Water Town.
