早在樂隊正式成立之前，都出生于加拿大安大略省的吉他手兼主唱Bizzy D(原名Derick Whibley)、鼓手Stevo32(原名Steve Jocz)、吉他手Dave Brownsound(原名Dave Baksh)以及貝司手Cone McCaslin于1997年的夏天，就在他們即將從高中畢業(yè)的41天之前，(也有另外的說法說離夏天還有41天,summer簡稱sum).這四個瘋狂的家伙毅然決定組建一支樂隊，并以此為靈感，將樂隊取名為Sum41.
經(jīng)過了一年多的磨合之后，他們開始與加拿大當?shù)氐莫毩S牌Aquarius洽談合約事宜，而此時，擁有U2這樣的大牌樂隊的主流廠牌Island也對Sum41青睞有加。Island的官員對于樂隊獨立完成的電子檔案的宣傳創(chuàng)意印象非常深刻，因為在這一套完全DIY的宣傳檔案中，包含了Sum41充滿爆發(fā)力的現(xiàn)場演出實錄以及樂隊成員詼諧幽默的自白
