A: Do you want to hear a funny joke?
B: OK. Are you sure it's funny, though?
A: Well, you'll see.
B: OK.
B:好。
A: OK, an Englishman, a Scotsman, and an Irishman were going on a trip across the desert, and they could only take one thing with them.
B: I see.
B:我懂。
A: So they met up at the start of the journey and showed each other their equipment.
B: Oh, that's funny!
A: Hang on, I haven't finished yet.
B: Oh, sorry.
B:噢,抱歉。
A: Well, as I was saying, they showed each other what they had decided to bring. The Englishman had brought some water. "If we get thirsty, we'll have something to drink," he said. The Scotsman brought a map. "If we get lost, we'll be able to find our way." The Irishman had brought a car door.
B: A car door? You mean just one car door?
A: Yep. A car door. "Why the door?" the others asked him. "Well," he said, “If it gets hot, we can open the window." Do you get it?
A:沒(méi)錯(cuò),就是車(chē)門(mén)。
B:Well…
A: I had a terrible journey back from Bangkok last week.
B: Really? Why? What happened?
A: Well, first of all, the taxi that was taking me from the client's office to the airport broke down on the freeway.
B: Oh. no.
A: Yes, and the driver didn't speak any English or Chinese and he didn't have a phone on him-can you believe it?-and his radio didn't work. So there was no way he could get in touch with the office to get them to send another taxi.
B: So what did you do?
A:Well, I actually thumbed a lift.
B:You what?
B:真的嗎?
A:Yes, I stood on the side of the freeway and stuck my thumb out, and a passing truck stopped and took me to the airport.
B:Wow, good for you.
A: Yes, except he drove really slowly, and I missed my flight.
B: Oh, no!
A: Yes, so I had to wait three hours for the next one. I didn't get home till four in the morning, and when I got home I realized I'd left my house keys in my hotel in Bangkok.
B: You really have bad luck, don't you?
A: Seems like it.
A: Do you remember John from head office?
B: Yes.
B:記得。
A: Have you heard what happened to him?
B: No, what?
B:沒(méi)有。
A: He had his car stolen. Actually he was kidnapped while he was in the car.
B: What do you mean?
A: Well, apparently, he was just getting into his car-he'd parked it in one of those underground multi-story things-he was just getting in and suddenly three guys with guns opened the back doors of the car and got in.
B: Crikey. Where did this happen?
A: In Taichung, I think.
B: Oh, right, I hear they have a lot of this kind of problem down there.
A: Really? Well anyway, they pointed their guns at him and said, you know, keep calm and drive out. …we don't want to hurt you...we just want your car.
A真的嗎?
B: So what happened?
A: Well, he drove out, and when he got to the booth to pay the attendant, he pretended to have an epileptic fit, you know, to scare the thieves away. The attendant was no help at all: even though the guys were holding guns in plain view, he did nothing.
B: That's terrible.
A:Yes, makes you think, doesn't it.
B:So what happened next?
A:Well, he kept on pretending to have a fit, so they freaked out and just ran away.
B:Well, he sure was lucky.
A: I'll say.
