look at a book?
1. 表示閱讀性地“看書(shū)”(即讀書(shū))，一般要用動(dòng)詞 read。如：
Don’t read such books. 不要讀那樣的書(shū)。
He is reading a book on Shakespeare. 他在看一本關(guān)于莎士比亞的書(shū)。
但是，在許多情況下，“看書(shū)”只需用read 就夠了(尤其是泛泛地表示“看書(shū)”時(shí))，無(wú)需后接book作賓語(yǔ)。如：
In the evening I usually read. 晚上我常?？磿?shū)。
This light is too poor to read by. 這光線太暗不能看書(shū)。
I read much less now than I did at school. 我現(xiàn)在看書(shū)遠(yuǎn)比我上學(xué)時(shí)少。
2. 若不是表示閱讀性地“看書(shū)”，而只是大概地看一看，比如看看書(shū)的封面、定價(jià)、內(nèi)容提要等，或者回答問(wèn)題時(shí)看看書(shū)的某些章節(jié)或字句等，或者是考試時(shí)悼詞楸鏡齲此時(shí)都不宜用動(dòng)詞read, 可用look at, see 等。如：
Can I look at those books? 我可以看看那些書(shū)嗎?
Jim demanded to see my books. 吉姆要求看看我的書(shū)。
Please answer my questions without looking at your books. 請(qǐng)不看書(shū)回答我的問(wèn)題。
Students must not look at their books during examinations. 學(xué)生考試不準(zhǔn)舞弊。

英語(yǔ)可說(shuō)happy Christmas 嗎?請(qǐng)看這樣一道題：

此題應(yīng)選 D。容易誤選A，B。錯(cuò)誤思維是：
1. 可以說(shuō) Happy new year, 但必須說(shuō) Merry Christmas.
2. the same as, the same...as 是固定搭配。
關(guān)于第2點(diǎn)，比較好解釋，因?yàn)?The) Same to you. 是口語(yǔ)慣用語(yǔ)，回答祝愿，其意為“也祝你……”。
而第1點(diǎn)搞錯(cuò)的人就很多了，不少人都想當(dāng)然地認(rèn)為不能像Happy New Year, Happy birthday那樣用Happy Christmas, 其實(shí)這是一種典型的想當(dāng)然錯(cuò)誤，請(qǐng)看有關(guān)_詞書(shū)的實(shí)例。如：

2. 又如章振邦教授主編的兩本英語(yǔ)語(yǔ)法著作。如：
1)Happy Christmas. 《新編英語(yǔ)語(yǔ)法教程》(p. 459)
2)A Happy Christmas to all. 《新編英語(yǔ)語(yǔ)法》(上冊(cè)p. 183)
3. 再如《英語(yǔ)學(xué)習(xí)》雜志，1992年第7期p. 17的一段對(duì)話中，多次將 Happy Christmas 與 Merry Christmas 交替使用。
4. 如果你是一個(gè)層次稍高的英語(yǔ)學(xué)習(xí)者，你可能會(huì)讀過(guò)楊豈深教授主編的《英國(guó)文學(xué)選讀》(Book 3)，如果你細(xì)心的話，你會(huì)發(fā)現(xiàn)該書(shū) ANGLO-SAXON ATTITUDES 一文里，也在多次交替使用 Happy Christmas 和 Merry Christmas。

漢語(yǔ)中的“查字典”，說(shuō)成英語(yǔ)通常是 look up sth in a dictionary 或 consult [refer to] a dictionary。如：
I refer to the dictionary frequently. 我經(jīng)常查閱詞典。
You can look the word up in the dictionary. 你可以在詞典里查這個(gè)詞。
He often consulted a dictionary when he read the book. 他讀這本書(shū)時(shí)經(jīng)常查字典。
I looked the word up in the dictionary to refresh my memory of its exact meaning. 我查了詞典，以便弄清這個(gè)詞的準(zhǔn)確意思。
I often look up the words I don’t know in the dictionary or on the Internet. 我經(jīng)常在字典里或網(wǎng)上查找我不認(rèn)識(shí)的單詞。
“Is that the correct spelling?” “I don’t know—look it up in a dictionary.” “那是正確的拼寫(xiě)嗎?”“我不知道——查查詞典吧?！?/p>
I didn’t know what “l(fā)oquacious” meant and had to look it up in a dictionary. 我不知道loquacious這個(gè)是什么意思，所以只好查了詞典。
有不少人認(rèn)為英語(yǔ)習(xí)慣上不能直接說(shuō) look up the dictionary, 其實(shí)這種表達(dá)在英語(yǔ)中也可以用，只是比較少見(jiàn)而已。例如：
