  范文

Thanks to the rapid development of Internet and mass medias, people today have more access to information. Exposed to various news and reports, people actually tend to pay more attention to those similar to their own. Actually, a better way to acquire information is for people to be open-minded and embrace different point of views.

Admittedly, by reading news from reporters with opinions similar to us, we find strong supports to our ideas and become more confident while discussing with friends. The citation from an authoritative source lends credibility to our argument. For example, people who are against government’s policy of banning the free offer of plastic bags in supermarket would be in favor of the articles explaining how the plastic bag ban would negatively influence economy and also fail to protect environment. However, to be confident and well informed, we also need to know different thoughts.

To begin with, it is beneficial for people to develop critical thinking through obtaining news reported by journalists holding different opinions. Since young, people are taught by both parents and teachers to think from different perspectives, including both advantages and disadvantages. With views from different angles, we are able to have a better understanding of the event and hence form our own thinking without being misled. For example, when we read the news that the government actively promotes the application of solar energy nationwide, we should not only read articles emphasizing the benefits of reducing reliance on fossil fuels and emission of carbon dioxide, but also look through reports about how the production of facilities damaging environment: the use of heavy metal. Then, we know solar energy is a good but not perfect solution.

Secondly, as social animals, we need to learn how and why people think differently, which allows us to be more tolerant. Living in a society advocating freedom of thoughts and expression, we may encounter people holding various opinions. With clear understanding of different views on an event, we know how to effectively communicate with them and even compromise if necessary. Otherwise, the conflicting thoughts may lead us to meaningless argument or even quarrel. When it came the final outcome of the Referendum that Britain would quit from EU, it is unwise to argue the benefits of leaving with people working in finance sectors who have to witness the coming financial chaos and devaluation of pounds.

To sum up, we need to embrace different opinions, so as to develop critical thinking and effectively communicate with people holding various views.

It is important to read or watch the news presented by people whose views are similar to your own or read or watch the news presented by whose views are different from your own.
