Cold weather can be hard on pets, just like it can be hard on people. Sometimes owners forget that their cats are just as used to the warm "home" as they are. Some owners will leave their animals outside for a long period of time, thinking that all animals are used to living outdoors. This can put their pets in danger of serious illness. There are things you can do to keep your animal warm and safe.
Keep your pets inside as much as you can when the weather is bad. If you have to take them out, stay outside with them. When you're cold enough to go inside, they probably are too. If you must leave them outside for a long time, make sure they have a warm "home" against the wind, thick bedding, and plenty of drinking water.
If left alone outside, dogs and cats can be very smart in their search for warm place. They can dig into snow banks or hide somewhere. Watch them closely when they are left outdoors, and offer them good place of good condition. Keep an eye on your pet's water. Sometimes owners don't know that a water bowl has become ice and their pet can't get anything to drink. Animals that don't have clean and drinking water may drink dirty water outside, which may have something unhealthy for them.

In today’s English class, students had a speech competition. They talked about whether e-books should take the place of print books. The following are the speeches given by two students.
Joshua Lee:
While many people argue that e-books don’t feel the same as“real”books we should consider that the printing industry does a lot of harm to our 75 . Producing books means cutting down millions of trees for paper, and the processes of printing requires a great deal of energy. E-books need no papers at all. They will probably 76 our use of energy and natural resources.
77 ,e-books allow people to get information more easily.E-books can be stored and selected form huge digital libraries. These libraries can hold many more books than a traditional bookstore or library can. People can quickly find and read their books on an e-reader at any time and in any place.
Joy Pamnani:
I strongly believe that print books must 78 . In my opinion,e-books have many disadvantages, E-books aren’t as environmentally friendly as you think. A common argument used by e-book supporters is that e-books save paper. But isn’t it also true that there’s more carbon being let out by the electronic devices(設(shè)備)?
Since you have to spend extra money on those devices before you can buy and read e-books, they aren’t 79 at all. Besides, you can’t easily write notes on an e-reader, and you can’t read anything when they run out of battery.
E-books are unhealthy too. The light given off by these devices can lead to 80 problem. A study showed it took e-book readers an average of ten minutes longer to fall asleep than those who read print books.

D. Answer the questions(回答下列問題)(共12分)
That cold January night , I was growing sick of my life in the city I lived. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theater. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and the life in this awful place.
As I walked down the empty street under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold.“Run!”I told myself and began to do so, both to keep warm and keep away from any possible danger.
About a block form my flat, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. The noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. I didn’t realize what the noise had been until I reached my flat and unlocked the door. It had been my wallet falling to the street.
I wasn’t cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I had heard the noise. Although I searched the street for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.
Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard a rubbish truck stop next to me. A voice called from the inside,“Alisa Camacho?”I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened and a man jumped out.“Is this what you’re looking for?”he asked, holding up a small square shape.
It was nearly 3 a.m. by the time I got into bed. I wouldn’t get much sleep that night. But I had got my wallet back. I also had got back some enjoyment of city life.

Restaurants in the USA
Steve’s Pizza
So many pizza stores in South Beach, but ask a Miami Beach local where to get the best pizza and they’ll tell you about Steve’s. This is New York–style pizza, handmade with care and good ingredients (佐料). New stores of Steve’s are opening elsewhere in Miami, all in non-tourist areas.

Opening hours: 5pm-10pm
Absolute Baking & Café
The screen door is always swinging open at this town hot spot with giant breakfasts. Try the green chili on eggs – it’s made from scratch, as are the organic breads. And lunch includes salads, big sandwiches and local grass-fed beef burgers. Don’t miss a square of soft, fresh carrot cake.
Opening hours: 7am-2pm Walt’s Wharf
Everybody’s favorite for fresh fish (some drive in from LA), Walt’s packs them in on weekends. You can’t order your dinner (though they’re accepted for lunch), but it’s worth the wait for the seafood and steaks in the many-windowed ground floor or upstairs in captain’s chairs.

You probably know many of the things that you can do with the hundreds of different muscles(肌肉) in your body. But have you ever thought about how the muscles in an animal’s body are different from yours? An animal’s muscles are made to do the things that are the most important for its life.
Lions are hunters. They depend on their ability to catch other animals. Lions must be fast in order to catch their prey(獵物). The powerful muscles in their back legs allow them to run at speeds of more than 30 miles per hour. They can also jump a distance of more than 35 feet. The strong muscles in their front legs help them catch their prey.
Snakes also use their muscles for hunting prey and for movement, but their muscles work in very different ways than lion’s do. Because snakes do not have any legs, they use their muscles to push against the ground or other objects to move themselves forward. Their muscles also allow them to eat things that seem much too large. For example, a snake may eat an egg that is larger than the width of its body. How does this happen? The snake’s strong neck muscles work together to push the egg down the mouth.
The elephant’s long nose has a lot of muscles. Scientist believe that the nose alone has more than 100, 000 muscles! This is because the elephant uses its nose much in the same way that people use their hands and fingers. Even though the nose is large, it can perform surprisingly tasks. For example, an elephant can pick up a tree by its roots or even to lift a baby elephant.
The great muscles of these animals seem pretty unbelievable. But the muscles in your body work exactly the way you need them to. After all, it might be fun to be able to jump a distance of 30 feet, but as a human being, there is just not much need for it.
34.The underlined word “hunters” in Paragraph 2 means persons or animals that ________.
A. keep animals for fun B. raise animals for meat
C. catch animals for food D. run after animals for exercise
35.According to the passage, what makes the muscles in your body different from an animal’s?
A. The exercise. B. Your power.
C. The environment. D. Your needs.
36. Which of the following shows structure(結(jié)構(gòu)) of the passage? (P=Paragraph)

One night, when I was eight, my mother gently asked me a question I would never forget. “Cindy, my company wants to promote (升職) me but needs me to work in Brazil. This is like your teacher telling you that you’ve done well and allowing you to skip (跳) a grade, but you’ll have to leave your friends. Would you say yes to your teacher?” She gave me a hug and asked me to think about it. I was lost in thought. The question kept me wondering for the rest of the night. I had said “yes” but for the first time, I realized the difficult decisions adults had to make.
For almost four years, my mother would call us from Brazil every day. Every evening I’d eagerly wait for the phone to ring and then tell her everything happened during the day. A phone call, however, could never take her place and it was difficult not to feel lonely at times.
During my fourth-grade Christmas break, we flew to Rio to visit her. Looking at her large empty apartment, ▲ It was then I started to understand the difficult choices she had to make. She needed to think about both family and work. Faced with difficult decisions, she used to tell me, you wouldn’t know whether you make the right choice, but you could always make the best out of the situation, with a positive attitude.
Back home, I reminded myself that what my mother could do, I could, too. If she managed to live in Rio all by herself, I, too, could learn to be independent. I learn how to take care of myself and set high but achievable goals.
My mother is now back with us. But I will never forget what the experience has really taught me. I’ve learned a lot because of this separation. There are lots of difficult decisions that we have to face in our life. We need to have a positive attitude no matter what happens.
37. It was _____ for the writer to say “yes” to her mother’s decision.
A. difficult B. excited C. unusual D. happy
38. Which of the following sentence can be put in the blank ▲ in Paragraph 3?
A. I thought my mother might regret her decision.
B. I thought my mother might leave Brazil with us.
C. I realized my mother behaved well in her company.
D. I realized how lonely my mother was in Brazil herself.
39. It can be learned from the passage that the writer ______.
A. achieved all the high goals in her life
B. wanted to go abroad alone like her mother
C. found it hard to make any decision
D. learned a lot from the unforgettable experience
D
It happens every night—bedtime. But what if you’re not sleepy? Should you still go to bed if you are just going to lie there with your eyes wide open? It’s a problem that has been around as long as there are people trying to sleep.
You might be excited by something you did in the day. You might be nervous about what you’re going to do the next day. Maybe you don’t like sleeping alone in your room. Maybe you have frightening dreams. All of these are possible reasons for your sleeping problem. However, there are some steps you can take to help you solve it.
One thing that can help is talking to a parent or another trusted adult about what you’re worrying about at bedtime. For example, if you’re nervous about taking a test, or upset about being teased (被嘲弄) at school, it can really help to tell somebody. Knowing that somebody has heard you can help ease your mind so that you can have a good rest.
Sleeping in a comfortable bed in a quiet and cool room is a good choice. If there’s anything in your room that makes you feel uneasy or anxious at night, like a picture that looks strange in the dark, or a noisy faucet (水龍頭) in the bathroom, be sure to ask your parents to move or fix it. Make sure electronics, such as mobile phones or iPads, are kept away from your bed. They can keep you excited, making it harder for you to fall asleep.
If you are usually restless around bedtime, doing certain things to relax beforehand may help you fall asleep. Try to take more time to wind down by taking a warm bath, or listening to a bedtime story at least 30 minutes before you go to sleep. It also helps to follow a bedtime routine and go to sleep at the same time every night. As a result, your body will get the message that it’s almost time to sleep. Your body will know to start feeling tired.
In order to find the right solution for you, it’s possible that you understand what exactly is keeping you up at night. Getting a good night’s sleep is worth the time and effort of finding the right solution to your sleeping problem.
40. Paragraph 2 is mainly about _________.
A. why people have frightening dreams at night
B. why daytime activities influence people’s sleep
C. what can help people solve the sleeping problem
D. what may make it difficult for people to fall asleep
41. What does the phrase “wind down” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Keep clean. B. Get relaxed. C. Stay awake. D. Feel sleepy.
42. To get a good sleep, what does the writer advise you to do first?
A. To go to bed at a certain time every night.
B. To do something to make you tired in the day.
C. To stay away from electronics before going to bed.
D. To know the exact reason why you stay awake at night.
43. What is probably the best title for the passage?
A. Sleep Quality B. Frightening Bedtime
C. Getting a Good Sleep D. Care for the Health

Marco Polo was from Venice, Italy. In 1271, at the age of 17, Marco went on a trip with his father and uncle to China. Today people often travel to different places around the world. But it was very hard for people from Europe to visit China then. After three and a half years, the Polos reached China in 1275.
While he was there, Marco Polo worked for Kublai Khan, the emperor of China. He was able to learn and experience many things that were new to Europeans. In his diary, he wrote, “Kublai Khan’s palace is the greatest I’ve ever seen. The streets of the new capital, Dadu, are so straight and so wide.” Paper money also took him by surprise, since it was not yet in use in the West at that time. Homes were heated with “ black stones… which burn like wood. ”Those stones were coal, and most of the Europeans knew little about it then.
After 17 years in China, Marco and his family finally returned to Venice. After he returned home, Marco completed a book called The Travels of Marco Polo, full of facts about his wonderful experiences in China.

Hi Armino,
Glad to hear from you again. As you mentioned in your email, there are indeed some table manners in China. For example, we are not supposed to start eating first if there are older people at the table. And it’s impolite to point at anyone with chopsticks. As for places of interest, I’ll show you around Tai Lake. You can enjoy both the fresh fishes and the beautiful scenery. Also, Huzhou is the hometown of writing brushes. I suggest you go to the Huzhou Writing Brush Museum which is full of different kinds of the writing brushes.
I’m looking forward to seeing you!
