How often do you use your car? Can you use your car less often? Do you know the following facts in the UK?

·About 50% of all car journeys are just for fun.

·Over 80% people go to work by car.

·25% car journeys are under two miles.

·70% car journeys are under five miles.

  WALKING & CYCLING

Instead of using the car for short journeys, why not walk or ride a bicycle? Walking is the most popular form of exercise—it’s healthy and it can save money. If you work nearby, try walking or cycling instead of driving. Walking your children to school gives them valuable road experience.

  BUSES

Bus companies are using new buses: some run on new fuelswhich produce less pollution; some have easier access(通路)for disabled and old people. There are special traffic lanes (行車道)to make bus journeys easier. So do something to help solve the pollution problem----let the bus take you to work and your children to school.

  TRAINS

All car journeys, long or short, can be hard work. For some trips, it is wiser to take the train. Leave your car at home and walk, cycle or take a bus to and from the station. Train travel is fast, safe and comfortable. Train tickets are not always expensive.

  47. How many of car journeys are just for fun in the UK?

  A. 25%. B. About 50%.

  C. 70%. D. Over 80%.

  48. The writer believes that _____________________ can give children valuable road experience.

Different types of maps have different uses.

Tourist maps, for example, have signs to show places of interest in an area. When tourists read these maps, it is easy for them to find where to go and what to see in a place and it is easy for them to go and find their ways to these places.

Road maps show large areas so that people can plan long journeys. Different types of roads are given different numbers. For example, if you want to go to Wood Green, you just follow No. 621 Road and keep looking at the road signs.

Distribution maps (分布圖) use colors or signs to show facts about an area. For example, where different languages are spoken, how many people live in an area, how cold and hot some places are, or whether a place is short of water.

Some maps, such as railway maps, use straightlines to show everything. This is easy for people to read. Trains are fast. People don’t have to think about small places they go past. They just need to know the two ends of their trips.

  50. Jim is going to Beijing Zoo. Which map does he need most?

  A. A tourist map. B. A road map.

  C. A distribution map. D. A railway map.

  51. How can you tell different roads on road maps?

  A. By using different colors. B. By finding the numbers.

  C. By following No. 621 Road. D. By looking at the road signs.

  52. Why do railway maps use straight lines?

  A. Because railways are straight. B. Because people like straight lines.

  C

Living and dealing with kids can be a tough job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even tougher.

If I have learned anything in my 16 years, it is that communication is very important, both when you disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let other person know how you are feeling. If you are not able to communicate, you drift apart. When you are mad at your parents, or anyone else, not talking to them doesn’t solve anything.

Communication begins with the concerns (關(guān)心) of another. It means that you can’t just come home from school, go up to your room and take no notice to anyone. Even if you just say “Hi”, and see how their day was for five minutes, it is better than nothing.

If you looked up the word “communication” in a dictionary, it would say “the exchange of ideas, the conveyance (表達)of information, correspondence (通信), means of communication: a letter or a message”. To keep a good relationship, you must keep communication strong. Let people know how you feel, even if it’s just by writing a note.

When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as a parent. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it, tell them that you’ll listen to what they have to say, and ask them politely to listen to you. Shouting or walking away only makes the situation worse.

Here is an example: one night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends. She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but she didn’t feel she could just ask to go home. That would be rude. After all, they had been nice enough to take her along with them. Needless to say, she was late getting home. Her parents were mad at first, but when Sophie explained why she was late, they weren’t as mad and let it go. Communication is the key here. If Sophie’s parents had not been willing to listen, Sophie would have been in a lot of trouble.

Communication isn’t a one-way matter: it goes both ways. Just remember: if you get into a situation like Sophie’s, telling the other person how you feel-------listening is the key to communication.

  56. In the writer’s view, dealing with parents is __________ than with children.

  A. more difficultB. much easier

  C. less interestingD. more interesting

  57. The underlined phrase “ drift apart” in Paragraph 2 means __________.

  A. keep up with othersB.move along smoothly

C.distance yourself form others D. come closer to each other

  58. The example in Paragraph 6 shows that ___________.

  A. Sophie is very polite to her parents

  B. Sophie’s parents are willing to listen to her

  C. Sophie did well in explaining her being late

  D. communication is the solutionto misunderstanding

  59. All the following statements are correct except “_______”.

  A. Communication is a two-way matter

  B. It is better to say “Hi” to others than say nothing

C.If you don’t agree with others, you’d better let them know

  D. When dealing with parents, you only need to listen to them

  八.閱讀短文 根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答問題(共10分,每小題2分)

You can’t always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belvacv doesn’t think that forgetting to check the weather report before heading out should result in you getting wet. To protect people from the rain, he created lampbrella, a lamp post with its own rain sensing umbrella.

The designer says he comes up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. “Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be all right to have a canopy(傘蓬)built into a street lamp.” he said.

The lampbrella is a street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella in need. Sensors(傳感器)then make sure that the umbrella offers the walkers whenever it starts raining.

In addition to the rain sensor, there’s also a 360° motion sensor on the street lamp which finds out whether anyone’s using the lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.

According to the designer, the lampbrella would move at a low speed, so as not to cause harm to the walkers. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lightning strike. Each lampbrella would offer enough protection for several people. Being fixed at 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of walkers.

While there are no plans to take lampbrella into production, Belyacv says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and insists this creation could be fixed on my street where a lot of people walk.

  64. Who designed lampbrella?

  65.Why did Belyacv create lampbrella?

  66. How soon is the the canopy closed if it’s not being used?

67.Would each lampbrella offer enough protection for only one person or several people?
