Arthur Miller(1915-2005)is universally recognized as one of the greatest dramatists of the 20th century. Miller`s father had moved to the USA from Austria- Hungary.Drawn like so many others by the“ Great American Dream.” However, he experienced severe financial hardship when his family business was ruined in the Great Depression of the early l930s.

Milles's most famous play, Death of a SaIesman, is a powerful attack on the American system, with its aggressive way of doing business and its insistence on money and social status as indicators of worth. In Willy Loman, the hero of the play, we see a man who has got into trouble with this system. Willy is “burnt out” and in the cruel world of business there is no room for sentiment : if he can't do the work, then he is no good to his employer, the Wagner Company, and he must go. Willy is painfully aware of this, and at a loss as to what to do with his lack of success. He refuses to face the fact that he has failed and kills himself in the end.

When it was first staged in 1949 ,the play was greeted with enthusiastic reviews, and it won the Tony Award for Best Play, the New York Drama Critics` Circle Award, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It was the first play to win all three of these major awards.

In a world with limited land, water and other natural resources (資源), the harm from the traditional business model is on the rise. Actually, the past decades has seen more and more forests disappearing and globe becoming increasingly warm. People now realize that this unhealthy situation must be changed, and that we must be able to develop in sustainable (可持續(xù)的) ways. That means growth with low carbon or development of sustainable products. In other words, we should keep the earth healthy while using its supply of natural resources.

Today, sustainable development is a proper trend in many countries. According to a recent study, the global market for low-carbon energy will become three times bigger over the next decades. China, for example, has set its mind on leading that market, hoping to seize chances in the new round of the global energy revolution. It is now trying hard to make full use of wind and solar energy, and is spending a huge amount of money making electric cars and high-speed trains. In addition, we are also seeing great growth in the global markets for sustainable products such as palm oil (棕櫚油), which is produced without cutting down valuable rainforest. In recent years the markets for sustainable products have grown by more than 50%.

Governments can fully develop the potential of these new markets. First, they can set high targets for reducing carbon emissions (排放) and targets for saving and reusing energy. Besides, stronger management of public resources like forests can also help to speed up the development. Finally, governments can avoid the huge expenses that are taking us in the wrong direction, and redirecting some of those expenses can accelerate the change from traditional model to a sustainable one.

The major challenge of this century is to find ways to meet the needs of growing population within the limits of this single planet. That is no small task, but it offers abundant new chances for sustainable product industries.

  64. The traditional business model is harmful because of all the following EXCEPT that ______.

  A. It makes the world warm

  B. it consumes natural resources

  C. it brings severe damage to forests

  D. it makes growth hard to continue

  65. What can we infer from Paragraph 2?

  A. China lacks wind and solar energy.

  B. China is the leader of the low-carbon market.

  C. High-speed trains are a low-carbon development.

  D. Palm oil is made at the cost of valuable forests.

  66. To full develop the low-carbon markets, government can ______.

  A. cut public expenses B. forbid carbon emission

  C. develop public resources D. encourage energy conservation

  67. What is the main purpose of the passage?

  A. To introduce a new business model.

  B. To compare two business models.

  C. To predict a change of the global market.

  D. To advocate sustainable development.

  D

A year after graduation, I was offered a position teaching a writing class. Teaching was a profession I had never seriously considered, though several of my stories had been published. I accepted the job without hesitation, as it would allow me to wear a tie and go by the name of Mr. Davis. My father went by the same name, and I liked to imagine people getting the two of us confused. “Wait a minute,” someone might say, “are you talking about Mr. Davis the retired man, or Mr. Davis the respectable scholar?”

The position was offered at the last minute, and I was given two weeks to prepare, a period I spent searching for briefcase (公文包) and standing before my full-length mirror, repeating the words, “Hello, class. I’m Mr. Davis.” Sometimes I would give myself an aggressive voice. Sometimes I would sound experienced. But when the day eventually came, my nerves kicked in and the true Mr. Davis was there. I sounded not like a thoughtful professor, but rather a 12-year-old boy.

I arrived in the classroom with paper cards designed in the shape of maple leaves. I had cut them myself out of orange construction paper. I saw nine students along a long table. I handed out the cards, and the students wrote down their names and fastened them to their breast pockets as I required.

“All right then,” I said. “Okey, here we go.” Then I opened my briefcase and realized that I had never thought beyond this moment. I had been thinking that the students would be the first to talk, offering their thoughts and opinions on the events of the day. I had imagined that I would sit on the edge of the desk, overlooking a forests of raised hands. Every student would shout to be heard and I would knock on something in order to silence them. I would yell, “Calm down, you’ll all get your turn. One at a time, one at a time!”

A terrible silence ruled the room, and seeing no other opinions, I instructed the students to pull out their notebooks and write a brief essay related to the theme of deep disappointment.

  68. The author took the job to teach writing because ______.

  A. he wanted to be respected B. he had written some storied

  C. he wanted to please his father D. he had dreamed of being a teacher

  69. What did the students do when the author started his class?

  A. They began to talk. B. They stayed silent.

  C. They raised their hands. D. They shouted to be heard.

  70. The author chose the composition topic probably because ______.

  A. he got disappointed with his first class

  B. he had prepared the topic before class

  C. he wanted to calm down the students

  D. he thought it was an easy topic

  (E:AB, F:AC, G:AD)

71 Being angry doesn’t really solve much, but what people do when they feel angry is important. The goal is to calm down and try to solve what is bothering you. This is hard for some kids and adults, too. Instead of calming down, some kids might keep getting more and more upset until they explode like a volcano!

72 Their anger might be so strong that they lose control of their temper. They may act in ways unacceptable and hurtful. People may say that someone has trouble controlling their temper. 73

Some kids might get so angry that they scream at their parents, break something, or even worse, hit their brothers or sisters. 74 However, it’s not OK for a kid to do any of those things. Kids don’t want to act in this way, but sometimes angry feelings can be hard to manage. So what to do?

Well, the good news is that kids don’t just have to keep making the same mistakes over and over again. 75 Imagine your temper as a puppy inside you that needs some training. The puppy is not bad — it will probably turn out a great dog. It just needs to learn some rules because, right now, that puppy is causing some problems to you.

  A. You can train you temper.

  B. You don’t want to cause trouble.

  C. Kids should be allowed to express their feelings, even angry ones.

  D. Everybody gets angry sometimes.

  E. In fact, they usually mean that a kid behaves badly when feeling angry.

  F. Instead of thinking of the person you’re angry with, think of something else.

  G. Some kids get angry more often or more easily than some other kids.

Walt Whitman was born in 1819 in New York City. During his long life, he watched America grow from a young nation to the strongest industrial power in the world. Whitman was influenced by events around him. But his poetry speaks of the inner self. He celebrated great people like President Abraham Lincoln. He also celebrated common people.

As a young man, Whitman worked as a school teacher, a printer and a newspaper reporter. He was thirty- six years old when his first book of poetry was published. He called it Leaves of Grass. It has only twelve poems. The poems are written in free verse. The lines do not follow any set form. Some lines are short and some are long. The word at the end of each line do not have a similar sound. They do not rhyme.

One of America’s greatest thinkers and writers immediately recognized the importance of Leaves of Grass. Ralph Waldo Emerson praised Whitman’s work. But most other poets and writers said nothing or denounced it.

The American Civil War began in 1861. During the war, Whitman worked without pay at army hospitals. He helped care for the wounded and dying soldiers. He sat beside these men for hours. He brought them food and wrote letters for them. After the Civil War, Whitman worked for government agencies. He watched the United States try to heal itself and increase democracy.

To Walt Whitman, democracy was more than a political system or idea. It was the natural form of government for free people. Whitman believed democracy was meant to honor the rights of every person and the equality of all people.

In 1873, Walt Whitman suffered a stroke . he spent the last few years of his life in Camden, New Jersey and wrote more poems. Whitman was poor and weak during the last few years of his life. He died in 1892.

In July 1994,Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, was struck by 21 pieces of comet . When the fragments (碎片) landed in the southern part of the giant planet , the explosions were watched by scientists here on earth. But what if our own planet was hit by a comet?

The year is 2094. It has been announced that a comet is heading towards the earth. Most of it will miss our planet, but two fragments will probably hit the southern part of the earth. The news has caused panic.

On 17 July, a fragment of four kilometers wide enters the earth’s atmosphere with a huge explosion. About half of the fragment is destroyed. But the major part survives and hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and an enormous wave is created and spreads. The wall of water rushes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometers an hour. Cities on the African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people are drowned. The waves move into the Indian Ocean and head towards Asia.

Millions of people are already dead in the southern part of the earth, but the north won’t escape for long. Tons of broken pieces are thrown into the atmosphere by the explosions. As the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, temperatures around the world fall to almost zero. Crops are ruined. Wars break out as countries fight for food. A year later civilization has collapsed. No more than 10 million people have survived.

Could it really happen? In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history of the earth. The dinosaurs were on the earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared. Many scientists believed that the earth was hit by a space fragment. The dinosaurs couldn’t survive in the cold climate that followed and they became extinct. Will we meet the same end?

64.Why does the author mention dinosaur at the end of the passage?

  A. Because they could only live in the warm climate.

  B. Because they once dominated the earth

  C. Because their extinction indicates future disasters.

  D. Because dinosaurs and humans never live in the same age.

65.It can be concluded that the passage is most probably part of a(n) ______.

  A. horror story B. news report

  C. research paper D. article of popular science

  Dear Mr. Li,

I’m glad to tell you that I have made great progress in my English study since I became a senior high school student.

When I started senior English in the beginning, I found it much more difficult then I almost lost heart. Later, I gradually realized the importance of English, so I worked hard every day, such as reciting and reading as often as possible. I also asked my teachers and classmates for better ways of learning English.

It is their help and your encouragement that help me improve my English. And now I’m getting more interested in it. Thank you so much for your great help.

  Wish you all the best.

  Yours ,

In the USA, many high schools and some colleges and universities have a special celebration(慶典) once a year called Homecoming. Former students and teachers come back to the school to enjoy the memories of their time there and the many Homecoming activities. Homecoming might last for only one day or for several days, even one week.

High schools usually choose one boy and one girl from the senior class to be the “Homecoming King” and “Homecoming Queen”. The students usually choose a boy and a girl who have done a lot for the school.

Most schools have a Homecoming parade(游行). The school band will often lead the way, followed by many different cars and trucks.

Most schools also have a football game for Homecoming—and, of course, tailgate parties. A tailgate party is a group of people drinking and eating around the back, or tailgate, of someone’s pick-up truck.

There are many other activities that might be a part of the Homecoming celebration. There might be a school-wide picnic one day; another day, there may be plays, concerts, competitions or games, all depending on a school’s traditions.

Homecoming celebrations nearly always end with a dance and/or a great dinner. The school is decorated beautifully, and a band is paid to come and play. Students dress up: guys in suits and girls in beautiful dresses.

  36. Homecoming in the USA _____.

A lot of teachers hate doodlers(亂寫亂畫的人)during classes.“Pay attention!” Teachers will often warn doodling students, sure that they must be daydreaming.

However, according to a recent study, doodling while listening to a boring lecture helps concentrate the attention。

Andrade, a psychology professor in England asked participants to listen to a boring lecture. Half the participants were told to color in squares and circles freely on a piece of paper while listening to the lecture. The other half weren’t given a task. After it was over, the participants were asked to retell the lecture.

Those given the doodling task (color in squares and circles) remembered 29 percent more information than the non-doodlers.Andrade said.

“If someone is doing a boring task, like listening to a dull conversation, they may start daydream,”said Professor Andrade.

“Daydreaming distracts (使分心) them from the task, resulting in poorer performance.A simple task, like doodling, can stop them from daydreaming without affecting their performance at the task.”he said.
