Working up a credit score for Walter Cavanagh has got to be a mathematical nightmare — the man has nearly 1,500 valid credit cards to his name and holds the Guinness Record for the most credit cards. Mr. Plastic Fantastic — a title given to him by Guinness World Records — is also the proud owner of the world's longest wallet, which can hold about 800 cards. But he uses it only to carry a few cards, while the rest are safely kept in bank safe¬deposit boxes.
Cavanagh started collecting credit cards in the late 1960s. “One of my best friends and I made a silly bet: the guy who could collect the most credit cards by the end of the year would win dinner,” he said. “I got 143 cards by the end of the year, and my friend gathered 138.” After winning that bet, Cavanagh decided to simply keep going with his unusual collection. He got credit cards from gas stations, airlines, bars, and even ice cream stores.
If there's one card missing from Cavanagh's collection, it's that from the Newberry Company. They repulsed his application for a card in the early 1970s, even though he'd collected over 100 by then. They said he had too much credit. Therefore, so far he hasn't had a Newberry card in his collection.
Cavanagh hasn't stopped applying for new cards — he's held the Guinness Record since 1971 and has no intention of letting go of it. He copies whole pages from a U.S. directory of businesses and keeps sending applications. If he receives a rejection, he writes back to the company explaining his goal and ambition. But he doesn't count useless cards in his total collection.
Thanks to all the cards to his name, Cavanagh has access to about $1.7 million at any moment. Despite this privilege, he has managed to maintain an excellent credit score.
The 72¬year¬old retired financial planner and credit expert has only one piece of advice to share: “Never use a card to buy anything you can't pay off in a couple of months. If you don't have the discipline,_you shouldn’t't have the cards.”
24.Cavanagh began to collect credit cards when he ________.
A.owned a very long wallet
B.made a bet with his friend
C.wanted to create a Guinness Record
D.was treated to dinner by his friend
25.What does the underlined word “repulsed” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Rejected. B.Recalled.
C.Repeated. D.Recognized.
26.What do the underlined words “the discipline” in the last paragraph probably refer to?
A.Having many cards to your own name.
B.Buying things by card and paying off in time.
C.Managing to own more privileges for your card.
D.Using a card to buy things as many times as possible.
27.What do we know about Cavanagh's cards?
A.Some of them are useless.
B.They are safely kept in his long wallet.
C.They have brought him fame and privilege.
D.Fewer new cards are added to his collections.

Interviewing is one of those skills that you can only get better at. You will never again feel so ill at ease as when you try it for the first time, you'll probably never feel entirely comfortable trying to get from another person answers that he or she maybe too shy to reveal. But at least half of the skill is mechanical. The rest is instinct(本能,直覺), which can all be learned with experience.
The basic tools for an interview are paper and two or three well-sharpened pencils. But keep your notebook or paper out of sight until you need it. There's nothing less likely to relax a person than the arrival of someone with a note-taking pad(便簽紙).Both of you need time to get to know each other. Take a while just to chat, judging what sort of person you're dealing with, getting him or her to trust you.
Never go into an interview without doing whatever homework you can. If you are interviewing a town official, know his voting record. If it's an actor, know what plays he has been in. You will not be liked if you inquire about facts that you could have learned in advance.
Many beginning interviewers are afraid that they are forcing the other person to answer questions and have no right to inquire about his personal secrets. The fear is almost 100 percent unnecessary. Unless the person really hates being interviewed, he is delighted that somebody wants to interview him.
Most men and women lead lives that are uninteresting, and they grasp any chance to talk to an outsider who seems eager to listen.
This doesn't certainly mean that it will go well. In general you will be talking to people who have never been interviewed before, and they will get used to the process awkwardly(笨拙地), perhaps not giving you anything that you can use. Come back another day; it will go better. You will both even begin to enjoy it—proof that you aren't forcing your victim to do something he doesn't really want to.
28. The word "reveal" could best be replaced by________.
A.ask B.question C.give D.look
29. According to the passage, during an interview notebooks or paper should________.
A.never be used B.be used only when necessary
C.be kept at home D.be given to the interviewer
30. It can be inferred from Paragraph 4 that most men and women ________.
A.are afraid to meet interviewers B.hate being interviewed
C.like being interviewed D.fear to speak to outsiders
31.According to the passage, if a person being interviewed is too uneasy to give you anything
useful, what should you do?
A.Arrange another interview. B.Give him or her a bad score.
C.Wait until he or she calms down. D.Try to make him or her trust you
D
Standing on one leg is a simple way to assess someone's risk of suffering a stroke (中風(fēng)), suggests a new study.
Researchers have found struggling to balance on one leg for 20 seconds or longer is linked to an increased risk of small blood vessel (血管) damage in the brain and reduced thinking ability in otherwise healthy people with no symptoms.
“Our study found the ability to balance on one leg is an important test for brain health. Individuals showing poor balance on one leg should receive increased attention, as this may indicate an increased risk of brain diseases and cognitive (認(rèn)知的) decline,” said Dr Tabara, associate professor at Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine in Japan.
The study, published in the journal Stroke, consisted of 841 women and 546 men, with an average age of 67. To measure one¬leg standing time, they stood with their eyes open and raised one leg. The maximum time for keeping the leg raised was 60 seconds. The participants performed the examination twice and the better of the two times was used in the study analysis.
The researchers found that the inability to balance on one leg for longer than 20 seconds was associated with brain diseases without symptoms. Overall, those with brain diseases were older and had high blood pressure than those who did not have such diseases.
Short one¬legged standing time was also linked with lower cognitive score. Although previous studies have examined the connection between physical abilities and the risk of stroke, this is among the first studies to closely examine how long a person can stand on one leg as an indication of their overall brain health.
Dr Tabara and his team also found a strong link between struggling to stand on one leg and increased age.
32.Dr Tabara suggested that one who couldn't stand on one leg for more than 20 seconds________.
A.try to improve his physical abilities
B.receive medical treatment for brain diseases
C.be given special attention to prevent accidents
D.be examined for other symptoms of brain diseases
33.Which of the following factors might decrease one¬leg standing time according to the text?
a.Heart diseases. b.Cognitive decline.
c.High blood pressure. d.The aging process. e.Brain diseases.
A.a, b, d B.a, c, d
C.b, c, e D.b, d, e
34.What can we learn about the study from the fourth paragraph?
A.It was led by Dr Tabara.
B.It included more than 1,300 people.
C.It examined people of different age groups.
D.It required the participants to close their eyes first.
35.Which of the following might be the best title for the text?
A.Overall Brain Health Deserves Close Attention
B.Brain Diseases Without Symptoms Require Attention
C.Can't Stand on One Leg? You May Be at Risk of Stroke
D.Can't Keep Your Balance? You May Have Brain Damage

M: Thanks, Sue. It’s a pleasure to be here.
W: Perhaps you could start by telling us where the idea for the book came from.
M: Well, it was first suggested in the early 1950s. Sir Hugh Beaver, the managing director of Guinness, was out shooting birds with some friends. A bird flew away so quickly that no one was able to shoot it. Sir Hugh wondered whether this bird was the fastest bird in Europe. And if it wasn’t the fastest, he wondered what was.
W: So, I suppose he went to the nearest library to look for the information, and he couldn't find it?
M: Yes, that’s exactly what happened. And this made Sir Hugh think there must be other people in the same situation who wanted this kind of information. He thought that, like himself, people would be interested in finding facts about records to satisfy their curiosity.
W: So, the idea for a book of records was born! And when did the first book come out?
M: A few years later, in 1955. So, to answer your first question, the tallest person in the world is 231.7 centimeters tall, and the oldest person is Jeanne L. Calment, who was born in February 1875.
W: There are also some rather strange records, aren’t there, Thomas?
M: Yes, that’s right. Did you know, Sue, that the shortest time it has taken…

Sydney Trains is one of the most economical, reliable and convenient ways to travel throughout Sydney and its surrounds.
Our network, the NSW Trains Intercity, covers suburban Sydney and extends to the Hunter, Central Coast, Blue Mountains, Southern Highlands and South Coast regions.
The network is made up of several colour-coded lines. Trains from different lines can share the same platform, so check display screen and listen to announcements.
Ticket prices are generally based on the distance traveled. You can visit Transportnsw. Info for details.
Getting to the City
In Sydney, if you’re near a train station, you’re on your way to the city. Every rail line leads directly or indirectly to the City Circle. It’s the loop around the central business district of Sydney. Most City stations are underground so look out for the sign on street level.
Automatic ticket gates
Large stations have automatic gates for entry to, and exit from, the station. If you have an Opal card or a ticket which has a magnetic stripe (磁條) you must use the automatic gates. You may use the wide gate for wheelchair, pram or luggage access. Station staff will assist you.
Night Ride buses
Most trains do not operate between midnight and 4:00 a.m. For your convenience a special Night Ride bus service is available between these hours on most Sydney suburban lines.
Track work
In order for the tracks to the maintained, we sometimes have to replace train with buses, particularly at weekends. Please check the track work section for the latest service changes on your line.

Most heroes are not super. They don’t appear in comic books, on television, or in movies. They just do what they believe needs to be done to make their world a better place. Bike Batman is one of them.
Bike Batman is a 30-year-old married engineer who lives in Seattle, Washington. He’s a cyclist who also buys and sells bikes as a hobby.
About three years ago, he was looking for a bike for his wife. He found one on Craigslist, a website where people list things they want to sell. As he often does, he also looked at Bike Index, a popular website that allows users to register their bikes and post reports when they’re taken. The bike, which he was considering purchasing, clearly matched one reported stolen on Bike Index. Then he called the person who claimed to be the bike’s owner and arranged to meet him— supposedly to complete the sale. When the two men met, Bike Batman told the thief, “You’ve got two options. You can wait until a police officer gets here, or you can just get out of here.” You can imagine what the thief did.
After that first success, Bike Batman developed a safer routine. When he sees questionable bike ads on Craigslist, he cross-references the image with bikes reported on Bike Index. Once he has confirmed it with the owner, he arranges a meet-up with the thief and will call the Seattle police department so that officers can participate in the action. In more than half of the 22 cases in which he has got back and returned bikes, the thieves have been arrested. In one case, Bike Batman even helped a family recover a wide range of prized possessions that suspects had stolen during a home burglary.
His nickname came from a discussion with a police officer who suggested he be called “Robin Hood”. Since he wasn’t exactly stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, “Batman” seemed a better fit. The idea of a superhero punishing criminals feels pretty silly to him, but the main reason he continues his work is to keep up Seattle’s reputation as a friendly city.
24. What is Bike Batman?
A. A superhero. B. A website manager. C. A Seattle citizen. D. A police officer.
25. What will Bike Batman first do when he discovers a questionable bike?
A. Arrange to meet the thief.
B. Call the police department.
C. Contact the owner of the stolen bike.
D. Look up the bike’s information on Bike Index.
26. Why does Bike Batman help find the lost bikes?
A. To become famous. B. To help poor people.
C. To punish bike thieves. D. To build a friendly city.
27. What can we learn from the passage?
A. the thieves refused to return the bikes.
B. the police failed to perform their duties.
C. Bike Batman began his good deeds by accident.
D. Bike Batman felt relieved to see the thieves arrested.

I have two kids, a boy and a girl. I don’t worry about my girl; I’m sure she’ll be well trained in mixed martial arts. I worry about my son. I’m pretty sure he’s going to be feminine (女性化的). Sorry to say that, but let’s face it. No dad wants his son to go feminine.
At the rate we’re moving in a couple of years you won’t be able to tell the difference between boys and girls. Sound extreme? Think about this. In every movie where advanced time-traveling beings come to our planet, there’s one constant: You can’t tell the male aliens from the female aliens!
But that’s the future. Kids today are soft and fat. People ask why. Is it junk food? No. Junk food has been around for fifty years. Is it video games? No. Video games have been around for thirty years. None of the kids playing them back in the day were terribly obese. We’re all scratching our heads trying to figure out what we’ve introduced to society to ruin our kids. But it’s not anything we’ve added that has ruined our kids. It’s stuff we’ve gotten rid of.
Take the gym rope for example. Remember that thing that stretched from the floor to the ceiling in your gym class that you could never climb? Most of the kids couldn’t make it to the top. But that wasn’t the point; the point was that you had to try while some middle-aged guy who couldn’t make it up a flight of stairs shouted at you. We should have put our son on that rope, and given him a head start. But we didn’t want to shame the boy, so we took it down.
Taking down the rope would be a good idea if there were no ropes in life. But they’re everywhere. You just can’t see them. They’re in every goal unrealized and expectation not met. The point everyone missed about the rope is you weren’t supposed to make it to the top. It was there to create a fire that burned in the oversize belly of every kid.
28. What is the example of aliens used to show?
A. Boys are going feminine.
B. Girls are growing like boys.
C. There are really time-traveling beings.
D. Alien movies are popular with children.
29. What causes kids today to be soft and fat?
A. Junk food. B. Video games.
C. Stuff introduced to society. D. Things removed from society.
30. How does the author find teenagers today?
A. They have too much dignity. B. They are overprotected.
C. They are less independent. D. They are too highly thought of.
31. What does the rope probably symbolize?
A. Goals. B. Expectations. C. Competition. D. Assistance.

Google’s new camera, called Clips, is a small, smart device. It comes with a case that has a clip (夾子), but it’s not designed to be worn on your clothing. Most interestingly, it uses artificial intelligence to take photography out of your hands so it can capture moments on its own.
This roughly 2-inch by 2-inch camera, with a three-hour battery life and Gorilla Glass for toughness, is intended for candid moments, like when a child does something cute that may happen too quickly for you to pull out your smartphone.
Onboard the Clips device, it uses machine learning algorithms ( 計(jì) 算 程 序 ) to help capture scenes. Those algorithms include face recognition. “Once it learns that there’s a face you see frequently, it’ll try to get nice photos of those faces,” said Juston Payne, the device’s product manager. And they also want it to recognize facial expressions, which involved “training it to know what happiness looks like”. The Google team also trained it to recognize what not to shoot—like when a child’s hand is over the lens, or if it is tossed in a dark purse.
The only way to see the images is by connecting the camera with your phone, as it has no screen for viewing or editing.
Were people concerned it could seem strange? Yes, Payne admitted. But they said they addressed that by making it obvious what it is. A green light on the front signals that it is on. Besides, unlike a camera meant to monitor your home, it is not connected to the Internet.
“This product is only possible because of the way that silicon has advanced,” Payne said, noting that it was only in the past year or so that they could squeeze the technology down into a device this size. Going forward, we’re likely to get more assistance from the artificial intelligence packed into our apps and gadgets.
32. What is the most outstanding feature of Clips?
A. It is equipped with tough glass. B. It enables easy Internet access.
C. It allows of hands-free photography. D. It can be worn on your clothing.
33. What does the underlined word “candid” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Brief. B. Touching. C. Unforgettable. D. Embarrassing.
34. What makes Clips a reality according to Juston Payne?
A. The popularity of the Internet. B. The advance in technology.
C. The rise of the smartphone industry. D. The reduction in the price of lens.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. A New Digital Camera from Google. B. New Gadgets in the Age of Apps.
C. Artificial Intelligence in Everyday Life. D. An Alternative Way to Photograph.

A dog’s mind is only equal to that of a two-year-old baby. 36 Therefore, they are probably the first to notice any change in the behavior of their masters. Let’s do some deep-digging to understand the amazing ability of a dog.
They sense your feelings. Isn’t it strange? 37 This is true. A study published in the Animal Cognition journal says that dogs are known to come to people who appear sad or depressed. It doesn’t matter if the person is their owner or a stranger. They have an ability to sense sadness and are attached to troubled souls.
38 Dogs can easily tell when you’re playing with favorites, and if you reward or play more with other pets, your dog might notice it and feel uncomfortable. As they can’t say how they feel, they will scratch, yawn or lick their mouths.
They smell fear. Let’s say you’re faced with your worst fear. Would you get scared and run away or just face it? Before choosing how to deal with it, you should remember one thing. 39 Research shows that dogs often sense their masters’ responses in dangerous situations. If you fear something and choose to back away, chances are that your pet is going to do the same thing.
They’re watching you. We are all raised as respectable individuals who are taught to respect elders, obey the law and help out people in need from time to time. 40 But if you have a dog at home, it is time to be serious about them. Dogs like generous people. So just be careful around your pet; it may judge you on how you behave with others.
A. They sense health problems.
B. They understand when ignored.
C. They know when no one’s looking at them.
D. You would be setting an example to your pet.
E. Every time you feel sad, you dog just know it.
F. But dogs are able to sense everything around them.
G. However, not all of us take these three things seriously.

One possible version:
Dear Peter,
I’m sorry to learn that you have been suffering headaches, which prevent you from performing well in your work. Worse still, you haven’t got better after taking medicine. Therefore I’m writing to recommend Chinese medicine to you.
From my perspective, Chinese medicine is superior to western medicine in a sense. Producing fewer side effects is typical of Chinese medicine. If time permits, patients can recover completely. In addition, Chinese medicine is less expensive, so you don’t need to worry about your budget. I believe the treatment is a great choice for you.
Hope you will recover soon. If there is anything I can do for you, please don’t hesitate to let me know.
Yours,
Li Hua

W: Oh, yes. Some people do. I hate this kind of attitude. I’m sure not everyone in Ola is like that. Do you look down upon others in the class?
M: Of course not! I often help them. And I’ve learned a lot from the people coming from other places. They are all hard-working. Most of them are talented.
W: Anyway, you will start a new life in a beautiful city.
M: Yes. I feel excited. I’ll write e-mails to you when I settle down.
W: Thank you. Then good-bye and good luck!
(Text 9)
M: Hi, Jim. Why did it take you so long to answer the phone? Were you playing computer games as usual?
W: Not this time. I was taking a shower.
M: I called you yesterday, but you didn’t answer the phone.
W: Sorry, I was out shopping yesterday and left my phone at home. I saw that you had called when I got back and I tried to call you back, so your phone was off.
M: Yeah, I went to a concert, so I turned my phone off.
W: So what’s up?
M: I wanted to invite you to my sister’s wedding next Saturday. Would you like to be my guest?
W: Sure. I bought a present for her yesterday next Saturday. Would you like to be my guest?
M: Sure. The wedding begins at 2:00 pm. I’ll come and pick you up forty minutes before that.
W: Could you come twenty minutes earlier than that? Megan is going to the wedding, too, and she needs a lift.
M: No problem. See you next Saturday.
(Text 10)
W: I’m Alexandra Grace, Educator at New Zealand Embassy Beijing. Today I will give you a brief introduction of New Zealand’s higher education. Small as it may be, New Zealand offers quality higher education opportunities, with two thirds of its higher education institutes within the top 10 of QS World University Rankings 2014. What makes New Zealand’s universities stand out is their abilities to provide high-end education.
Though Chinese students form the largest international student group in New Zealand, the country only ranks the 7th on Chinese students’ most desirable overseas destination list. The size of the country prevents it becoming a hot study destination. But it draws students with its safe and multi-cultural environment.
While it attracts mainly wealthy students, higher education in New Zealand is also affordable for many common Chinese families. Chinese students can get a British-based education with the school fee being some of the lowest in the world. On average, the school fee was about 25, 000 dollars per year, and the living costs were about 20, 000 dollars a year. Besides, students can do some part-time jobs. The money earned in those jobs is enough for them to travel around the country and enjoy its breath-taking scenery.

The Gilroy Garlic(大蒜) Festival started with a “crazy idea” by Dr. Rudy Melone.
In 1978, Melone, the President of Gavilan College in Gilroy, read an article in a newspaper which was about a small town in France. The town hosted a garlic festival every year and regarded itself as the “Garlic Capital of the World”. He doubted that Gilroy’s garlic production and processing were far greater. In fact, Christopher Ranch was then the largest shipper of garlic in the world.
So Melone set about trying to convince Christopher Ranch’s owner Don Christopher, to host a garlic festival of their own. At first, the idea seemed crazy. Outside of Italian families, garlic at the time was considered an esoteric material. It wasn’t something thought to be normal and it wasn’t something you generally shared in polite company.
But Melone had passion for Gilroy and garlic. He decided to stick to his idea. He and Christopher hired a local cook,Val Filice, to prepare a meal with a few garlicky dishes. The invited local media and food writers as well. The meal was a success, and the city leaders agreed to support them.
The first Gilroy Garlic Festival was held at Bloomfield Ranch in 1979. Rudy Melone served as the president; Don Christopher supplied all the garlic from his; and Val Filice was the head chef. They got about 50 community volunteers to help them and decided to give all the profits back to the community. Festival organizers weren’t sure at first if anyone would come, but were quickly shocked by the number of visitors. Despite all the chaos, the first Gilroy Garlic Festival served over 15,000 guests and produced $19,000 for the local community.
To date, the Gilroy Garlic Festival has given the city of Gilroy a sense of true community pride as well as worldwide recognition. Not bad for one man’s crazy idea!

27. What is the main idea of the passage?

Bridge of Hope School is a private school. It was set up in Kalangala about two years ago. Unlike government schools, which have very large classes of 90 children, many of whom do not want to learn, Bridge has small classes, so pupils get a great deal of attention. Small classes are good for teaching, but the school is always having difficulty with money since private schools are dependent on parents paying on time.
The school has five primary classes and three nursery classes. As the children progress through the school they will add another class next year. The total number of children in the primary classes is about 50. The parents of Bridge children are often higher earners than those that attend government schools. They want their children to have the best education available.
The school is not yet finished. The classrooms have no windows or doors. But it is very formal and insists on children wearing uniforms (制服). Discipline is strict and the children are well¬behaved. Only English can be spoken and not the local language. Although English is the national language and the language of education, government schools teach in their own language for the first three years.
School starts at 7 a.m. and the children have to be on time. Classes are formal, but children have to copy lots of things from the blackboard, because there are few textbooks, sometimes only one for the teacher to use. Class work is heavy and the children have tests every week. They also study during the holiday.

D. It is free for children to attend them.

A. list differences between a private and a government school
B. introduce a private school — Bridge of Hope School in Kalangala

As any person suffering from lack of sleep knows, dark circles under the eyes usually stand out after a bad night’s sleep.
But why do people get these dark eye bags? The answer is both genetic (that is, relating to your DNA) and environmental (a result of your everyday living, such as rubbing your eyes or getting too little sleep), said Dr. Carol Clinton, a skin-care researcher in Dublin, Ohio.
But “the biggest reason is genes.” Clinton told Live Science. Eye bags are generally more noticeable in people who, because of genes, have thin or pale skin. When people are tired or very nervous, blood circulation in the eye area becomes slow, allowing blood to pool there. Clinton said. Capillaries (毛細(xì)血管) stand out, leading to dark eye circles, she said.Besides, eye bags result from eyes’ fat moving forward. An age-connected increase in fat beneath the eyeballs leads to eye bags. “Anyway, when your eyes’ fat is moving forward, you may think about having an operation in that area,” Clinton said, “A person can get 9 hours of sleep a night, but still have eye bags because of a genetic development.”
In other cases, environmental problems cause eye bags. For example, allergies (過敏) — especially seasonal allergies—can cause capillaries to stand out. Getting too much sun can also damage and thin the skin, making dark circles under the eyes easy to see. Besides, eating salty foods can cause the body to hold more water, which makes eye bags worse, according to the Mayo Clinic.
32. In Clinton’s opinion, what is the main cause of the formation of dark eye bags?
A. Genes. B. Habits. C. Age. D. The environment.
33. What can rid you of your eye bags according to the text?
A. Getting much sun.
B. Drinking plenty of water.
C. Having an operation on the fat in the eye area.
D. Slowing your blood circulation in the eye area.
34. What can we learn from the text?
A. It’s possible to change genes.
B. Rubbing your eyes might cause dark eye bags.
C.Young people don’t get dark eye bags.
D. You can’t get dark eye bags if you get enough sleep.
35. What’s the best title for the text?
A. What Can You Do to Protect Your Eyes?
B. The Importance of Sleep to People’s Health
C. Several Measures to Remove Your Eye Bags
D. Why Do People Get “Bags” Under Their Eyes?
