Molly Boylan is one of the most successful business women in Canada after setting up her cosmetic (化妝company Blazes in 2010. Though she is very successful, she says that she finds it harder every year in balance her business with her family life. She sometimes feels that her two children know more about their baby-sitter than they do about her.
Molly employs around eighty people in her factory and warehouse (倉庫), and ten others in her two new fashion stores, but her newest employee is the most important one for her. After years of worrying about her business more than her family, she has decided to make Sally Pamonte new general manager in her company. Molly will still be involved in decision-making, and she’s going to stay in touch with the people who work for her, but Sally is going to look after day-to-day running of the business so that Molly can spend more time with the kids.
The new arrangement is going to start on Monday, and both of them are already excited about it. Sally says, “I’m very nervous, actually, but I’m sure Molly will help me a lot in the early days, even though I hope she feels she can trust me not to make too many mistakes.”
Molly, on the other hand, seems quite relaxed about the whole thing. ”I know that Sally’s going to be a very nice manager.” she says, “She’s only been here a couple of days and she’s already shown me how to work out a few problems we were having. The best thing though is that I feel a hundred times happier than I’ve been in years. I mean, I honestly can’t remember the last time I felt as relaxed as this, and my kids are really excited about my being at home more. To be honest, I wish I had made this decision years ago.”

Vanuatu is an island nation in the South Pacific. It is one of the smallest countries in the world. But for those who are interested in adventure and sport, there is a lot to do. Vanuatu’s islands offer visitors two of the most exciting and dangerous activities in the world: volcano surfing and land diving.
Volcano Surfing
On Tanna Island, Mount Yasur rises 300 meters into the sky. Yasur is an active volcano, and it erupts(爆發(fā))almost every day, sometimes several times a day. For centuries, people have climbed this mountain to visit the top. Recently, people have also started climbing Yasur to surf the volcano. In some ways, volcano surfing is like surfing in the sea, but in other ways it’s very different. Volcano surfers try to escape the erupting volcano—without getting hit by flying rocks! It’s fast, fun and dangerous—the perfect extreme sport(極限運(yùn)動(dòng)).
Land Diving
Most people are familiar with bungee jumping, but do you know bungee jumping started on Pentecost Island in Vanuatu and is almost fifteen centuries old? The activity, first called land diving, is part of a religious ceremony. A man ties tree vines(樹藤)to his legs. The message was short. I read it three times. “Hey, Mom, can I come to see you guys?” I wrote back, “Yes!” He said he hoped to make it in time for dinner.
I made a quick run to the market, put sheets on the guest bed and set the TV to record the Warriors’ game, so if traffic was awful, he wouldn’t have to miss the first half. Then I began cooking, cleaning, watching the clock and listening for his footsteps coming up the walk.
It’s called waiting. I’m good at it. When he was a newborn, I’d wait for him to go to sleep. Soon then I’d stand by his bed waiting for him to wake up. I waited, as he learned to do things like walking , talking and feeding himself; throwing a ball, riding a bike and reading a book.
I waited for him to start preschool, primary school, middle school and college.
I waited with dread for him to start driving. And I waited up every time he came home late.
I wait for my son to grow up, but that doesn’t mean the waiting game is over. It never really ends.
Mothers wait for all kinds of reasons—good news or bad, happiness or heartache. But the waiting is soon forgotten, usually, the minute a long awaited child walks through the door.
My boy will be here soon. But if he’s late, I can wait. I’m good at it. And he’s worth it. I will always leave a light on for him.
11. According to the passage, when her son came back, where would he sleep?
A. in the study B. in the living room
C. in his bedroom D. in the guest room
12. She recorded the Warriors’ game _______.
A. so that he could watched it often
B. in case he missed part of the game
C. because she loves the game so much
D. after she finished cooking the dinner
13. What does the underlined word “dread” mean?
A. 害怕 B. 驕傲 C. 厭惡 D. 激動(dòng)
. Which of the following about the writer is TRUE according to the reading?
A. Luckily, her son never makes her wait long.
B. When her son went to college, her waiting ended.
C. Waiting for her son is often boring, but once her son arrives she forgets about it.
D. She has experienced all kinds of feelings while waiting for her son to do things.
