I have always enjoyed studying Maths, Physics and Chemistry, and I would like the opportunity to continue this study. Chemical Engineering appeals to me because of the challenges involved in the application of scientific theory to practical, real world problems such as how to deal with nuclear waste. I particularly look forward to studying fluid dynamics as I was introduced to this during the Engineering Education Scheme (EES). I am aware that in today’s world chemical engineering has an increasingly important role across a wide range of industries from pharmaceuticals to petrochemicals. The broad range of career paths, and the opportunity to contribute to society through technological innovation, is for me, one of the main attractions of chemical engineering.
I have applied to take part in the Year In Industry scheme during which I hope to gain practical experience, as well as greater maturity enabling me to go into my degree course with improved skills and broader experience. I also hope to study e-learning courses on project management and presentation skills run by the IChemE. In Year 12 I took part in the EES, which improved my understanding and skills in team working, time management, and report writing, as well as visual and oral presentation. Throughout the course of the project the team had to frequently correspond with mentors in industry and academia and this experience has broadened my appreciation of practice and application in a real life situation. In July I attended a week-long ‘Into Engineering’ seminar run by REACT Engineering. Working in two teams, we were given a design exercise based upon a typical decommissioning project. I also attended a Headstart course at Newcastle University, which I thoroughly enjoyed. One of the main activities was to design, manufacture and test a small crane. I found both of these experiences very challenging, as we were given only limited time so we had to prioritise our tasks and carefully plan our work.
This year a fellow student and I were awarded £500 by the European Scholarship Prize to fund a visit to Prague to do research for our A-level History coursework. I gained an understanding of the city’s culture and history and further developed my independence. During the summer I represented my school on a Connexions review of a government white paper on 14-19 education. I gained an insight into the government’s proposals and learned a lot about working with different groups of people. Last year I was part of the editorial team for the school magazine. I wrote a number of articles and I was responsible for ensuring that staff contributions were ready for the deadline. I also enjoy participating in a range of sports and have represented the school at football and cricket, which has further enhanced my team working skills.
In my spare time I am working towards my Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. In September I completed a 4-day expedition in the Lake District, which tested my endurance but gave me a great sense of achievement. As part of the award I have been helping at the local youth café once a week, which I am really enjoying as it gives me the chance to meet new people. I also enjoy reading, particularly books on physics and Russian history. I am really interested in computers and I am currently trying to configure a Linux based file and print server for my home network.

I am a person keen on thinking and experiencing。 My lively character and vigorous energy have made me very active in extracurricular events in which I have sought an all—round personal development。 Sociology Studies will provide me with the kind of constant real life thinking I have always craved, while helping me to improve my analytical, practical & communication skills。 Also my concern and curiosity about society and its people inspired me to pursue this subject for my higher education, as I believe Sociology Studies sums up a lot in the changing nature of society。
My education has schooling my perception of society and people leading me to be acutely aware of social events, inequality, identities, cultures and religious fundamentalism, especially in a society such as the one I come from — China。 I was practicing in the Chinese Hope Project during summer holidays and volunteered to investigate the issue of low educational attendance rate for female students in rural China with my tutor from my high school and that was a very good experience as it not only made me realise how traditional cultural influence could remain unchanged in some of those rural areas in China and also the way parents and children interacting。 I always have wondered why for many Chinese students just like me, hundreds of them fail to choose what they really want to student and do as a career。 Chinese parents are definitely having strange influences on their kids' decision making in terms of education and career or in the worst cases; the parents decided what their kids should do solely。 My mother believes that I should go for Finance studies, while I clearly know that my interest has never been in the Mathematical formula and numbers, I always find the diversities of societies, people, beliefs, cultures and the way people interacting together very fascinating。 So, during this summer, my thoughts kept returning on why I worked so unsuccessfully towards studying finance and economics as my mother expected? And how can I truly become my own master by progressing a BA that I really like to engage more research and enrich myself with? How did all the cultural and beliefs affecting the way we acting the roles in the community? In which way an individual could actually build up and refine his/her identities?
In pursuing a Sociology degree, I seek answers to these questions。 A thorough examination of the Sociology behind human behaves could reveal the beliefs, values and identities; it enables us to exam and understand ourselves better。 While knowledge of Sociology will certainly benefit the social services
providing, I also maintain a passion for Culture Studies for that same reason。 Cultural behaviour study appeals to me because it tells us why we act in a certain way — under a cultural atmosphere。 Also for being in the UK for 3 years, the knowledge about the outside world has given me a unique and balanced perspective to examine the reality of Chinese society too。 In this historical epoch in which China is becoming closely integrated into the international community and playing an influence role in the world arena, I wish to gain insights into our society in its socio—culture aspects and to study how Chinese culture can respond to the globalization process。
By combining these thoughts into a good BA in Sociology degree programme, I can pursue my professional goal of doing education and community service work for the government and perhaps focusing in promote public welfare。 My experience in the past in social practices has not only equipped me with an intellectual foundation for my future studies but has also supplied me with my career plans。 In my eyes, China's several thousand years of history has given rise to the deep—entrenched rule by man instead of rule by law and nature。 In dealing with such issues like economic development, poverty elimination and the promotion of law, the framing and application of government policies seem to play a greater role。 Therefore, it is obvious that to contribute to public welfare and to national development, it is more realistic and useful to become a well—trained and well—qualified public administrator。 In this lies the motivation of my application for an undergraduate programme in sociology at your esteemed department。
WanSheng High School where I was studying is a key provincial high school that attracts best students from every part of the province。 In fierce academic competitions, I have managed to remain top—ten in my high school academic performance and was recommended by the school to Highbury College, Portsmouth to study my foundation course。 I passed the foundation course successfully in 20_ and was an outstanding student of my class。 I believe that my previous social practices activities and academic preparations have built a solid background for me to further my intensive and fruitful research in your BA in Sociology studies。 After gaining knowledge of both Sociology and different cultures at the highly regarded University of Leicester, I plan to work for social services to use my knowledge of social human behaviour to aid members of the public。

Applied Program: Statistics
When I was doing internship at the renowned _ Cosmetics Co. Ltd, I was deeply impressed by the motto from _, the founder of the company-"Believe in Miracle and Miracle will Indeed Happen." At one point during my undergraduate education I was very frustrated because I found that, due to the lack of effective methodology of numerical analysis, the teaching and the research of economics in China lags far behind the international standard as represented by the developed countries of the West. As a result, even though I am one of the top students from the _ University of Finance and Economics, I find it difficult for me to really enter the true realm of economics study. Instead of dealing a heavy blow on me, this discovery motivated me to maximize my efforts in the study of mathematics and to apply for an advanced degree program in statistics at your well-respected university after having completed my undergraduate program. It is my conviction that, as long as I have sufficient confidence myself and make sufficient efforts, I am bound to accomplish some form of achievements in the field of statistics and make due contributions to the development of quantitative research in economics in the Chinese academia. Miracle will indeed happen.
I specialized in accounting at the Accounting College of _ University of Finance and Economics. An undergraduate education in the specialty of accounting covers knowledge in a wide range of fields-economics, management science, mathematics, statistics, and even sociology. While providing me with a solid academic foundation, this education has enabled me to ferret out the areas that can really capture my interest. I have cherished a strong interest in mathematics since the primary school and developed my talents all the way through my middle and high school. But it is only through my undergraduate study that I have come to realize the vital importance of mathematical approaches to the study of economics. This very realization has further reinforced my determination to choose the career of an applied statistician in the future. Toward such an objective, I have devoted special efforts to the study of mathematics and statistics. Apart from intensive work in such compulsory courses as Calculus, Linear Algebra, Theory of Probability, Statistics, and Mathematical Statistics, I have also attended a series of important optional courses including Operational Research, Game Theory of Economics, Sampling Investigation and made full use of my spare time to learn the knowledge of statistics as much as possible.
My undergraduate education should be described as very rewarding and fruitful. For the past three consecutive years, I have maintained top ranking in my class and for two consecutive years I was given the "Outstanding Student" Award, winning Level-A scholarships. I have demonstrated special aptitudes in mathematics and in English. My natural talents in mathematics and my dedicated efforts to mathematics coursework have led my GPA in all the mathematics courses to reach 3.9, far exceeding the level of average students. In terms of English language, I have also been well above average. In the first semester in 1999 I won the first prize at the "Freshmen Cup" English Listen Comprehension Contest and in 2001 I won the first prize in the English Contest for College Students in China, the third prize at the Oral English Contest in _ Province. Even though I have assumed various responsibilities for extracurricular activities of several student organizations, I have still managed to perform well academically, a fact that should be attributed to my extra diligence, productive study methods, and effective allocation of my time and energy. From the very outset of my undergraduate career, I made up my mind to fully exploit all the available resources of my university to achieve comprehensive self-development and what I have achieved adequately testifies to the rewarding undergraduate life I have been living.
As a science that tries to discover inherent quantitative relationships among different data and make rational statistical inferences by applying relevant theories and methodologies, statistics has been widely applied in the modern society, its impact penetrating into almost all fields of physical and social sciences. With China's reform toward the market economy and its accession into the WTO, statistics is becoming increasingly important in China's economic life. The fact that the subject I am interested in will enjoy a broad prospect of application in China makes me very excited and confident concerning my future study and career. In my proposed program, I will first try to consolidate my foundation in statistics and then narrow down my interests to focus on Time Series Analysis and Statistic Inference.
I believe that to make rational inferences is one of the major functions of statistics. In many cases, pure statistical models or time series models can make more precise inferences and predictions than theoretical models of economics. The dilemma faced by modern economics in making predictions is one of the important reasons for me to choose statistics over economics as the area of my concentration. As an important aspect of statistical study and research, I will try to master one or two advanced statistical software such as Gauss and TSP. In addition, if possible, I wish to be a member of the research group of my future advisor under whose direction I can work on a full-length research project. It is equally desirable for me to do extensive internship at a specific government organization or a local enterprise so that I can apply my knowledge of statistics and test its efficacy.
Apart from the sound undergraduate education that I have received, together with my special achievements in mathematics and English, my creativity, perseverance, and my good logical thinking are three major factors of my implicit confidence in my future performance, just as they have contributed to my distinguished performance in the past over most of my peers. Meanwhile, I am also very proud of my past extracurricular performance, which has considerably improved my practical abilities beyond the mere coursework, like teamwork, organization and interpersonal communication. I served as student leader in the Students Union, editor of the university student newspaper, member of Accounting Study Group and Youth Volunteer Association. In 2003, I worked part-time as beauty consultant at the renowned American _ Cosmetics Company. An important experience directly related to my specialty is the internship I did in 2003 at the Statistical Bureau of _ City during which I worked on a city-wide population sampling investigation, collecting and analyzing data and accumulating much practical statistical experience.
I prioritize on _ University as the school for my Master's program in statistics because a careful study of your esteemed university shows me that it is a world famous university with a long academic tradition. In terms of the teaching and research of statistics, it plays a leading role not only in American but also in international academia. Naturally it becomes my ideal choice. As a student of accounting I have built up a sufficient foundation in statistics and mathematics requisite for a graduate program in statistics. Therefore, I sincerely wish that my application could be seriously considered.

Program: International Marketing
As a 23-year-old aspiring student who has grown up and received his education in pace with the evolution of China's market economy over the past two decades, I deem myself in possession of many professional qualities for undertaking a career in advanced marketing and business management. I believe that I have demonstrated more creativity, management skills, English language proficiency, and the courage to accept challenges than most of my peers on a number of important occasions-being selected from a large number of competitors to study at _ University of _ on an exchange program, winning prize in the _ for University Students, launching my own company upon completing my undergraduate program. My interest and my demonstrated abilities show me unmistakably that to take up a lifelong career in high-level marketing management will be very appropriate for me because that is where my potential lies. In order to scale new heights academically and to lay a solid foundation for my later-day career development, I would like to apply for a Master's program in international marketing at the prestigious Business School in _ University. For me, this is a self-conscious attempt to face challenge and to transcend my former self. I expect to be initiated into a first-rate academic environment in which my academic foundation is consolidated and my business potential is strengthened.
It was in _ Technology and Business School that I completed my undergraduate education, majoring in marketing. As an academic discipline, marketing fascinated me for its increasingly important strategic role in modern management and for its interdisciplinary character, as it encompasses management science, psychology, sociology, statistics, etc. From the very outset of my undergraduate program, I realized the importance of seeking a comprehensive development, on both academic and personal levels, in order to become a senior management professional in the future. Therefore, throughout my undergraduate program, I endeavored to make full exploitation of all the available educational resources of my university to improve my academic performance. An examination of my academic transcript will indicate that I have maintained a year-by-year ascendance in my study. Apart from that, I have also been very active in extracurricular activities and learned German and _ languages besides English. My ability to perform independent research was cultivated and improved through writing my internship treatise and graduation thesis, both of which were given a 95-point score, the highest score in my class. In particular, my thesis On the Marketing of Hi-Tech Products, by focusing on the major business risks involved in the marketing of hi-tech products and on the short and uncertain life cycle of those products, was rated "Excellent" for detailed analyses and novel perspectives that I offered in it.
The most important part of my undergraduate graduate program is definitely my short but memorable stay in _. As a junior, I was selected through a competitive screening test to embark on a 4-month exchange program with _'s _ Polytechnic on the strengths of my distinguished academic performance, English proficiency and computer skills. This exciting and memorable experience proved extremely beneficial to me-I gained marked improvement in my English, was exposed to a totally different life style and educational system, and achieved new understanding of the concept of marketing. Plunged into a new academic environment, I demonstrated a creative and a critical spirit rare in Chinese students, and won appreciation from my _ professors. In attending the course High Tech Marketing, my team members and I spent the entire semester verifying the plausibility of a business proposal that I raised but was rejected by my _ advisor. Under my insistence and through my continued refinement, my business proposal achieved eventual success and has been incorporated into the overall business plan of _ Company. In another course International Business Plan, my fruitful collaboration with my _ classmates led to our team's winning of the unprecedented full mark in the final evaluation of our course project. I also accumulated important experience of performing group research in the eAcademy project headed by Dr. _, in which I was responsible for the marketing planning of the enterprise.
Upon completing my undergraduate program, with the support of my friends and family members, I launched my own _ Trade Company that deals in medical equipment and provides hospital management consulting service. In doing this, I became one of the few Chinese graduates who established their own business. My business impulse originated from two sources. The first is my participation in the _ for University Students in which my team won Excellence Award (my responsibility was to formulate marketing plans for our "Optimum" Company and to conduct market surveys)。 Another is my internship as a senior student at an e-commerce company during which I planned and organized market investigations in preparation for the marketing of the company's latest product-Hospital Management Information System. I saw myself as possessing necessary business management skills and marketing potential.
Managing my own company, making real business plans and designing real marketing strategies, all those have allowed me to apply my knowledge and to tap my business potential. In making this bold move, I wish to develop a clear understanding of what I am good at and to chart the course of my future career development. My present application for a Master's program at your esteemed university is motivated by my need to receive further academic input that will enable me to develop my company into a major enterprise.
According to modern management theories, successful enterprises must be highly customer-oriented and marketing is no longer the job of a particular functional department of an enterprise. As a developing country with a planned economy for many decades, China lacks a well-developed science of management and marketing, and the current marketing practices are far from mature as marketing as a standard academic discipline is only of recent origin. Yet this may prove a blessing in disguise for me as I am located at the crucial point of China's development in marketing theory and practice and I will enjoy greater chances of success. In my proposed degree program, I would like to focus on the marketing of Hi-tech products and on the marketing of multinational companies under cultural pluralism. The relationship between marketing and cultural pluralism has long been my major research concern and during my study in _ I have already paid special attention to the impact of cultural differences between East and West on marketing. In my future studies, I will be exposed a greater cultural diversity, which I believe will further facilitate my study and research. It is an art to deal with the subtle relationship between culture and marketing and I need to gain more understanding and experience in this regard.
Young as I am, I am fully aware of the transitory nature of life and all that I can do is to race against time to maximize knowledge and expertise and to enrich the value of my life within the limited span of my life. Through my future study, I wish to develop myself into a marketing specialist. This is an objective, and I am in possession of the necessary foundation, academic and professional, and the potential for realizing this objective.

Applied Program:Organizational Behavior
I am interested in the field of study of Organizational Behavior. In the past, I have had the experience of working in settings where the people and the corporate cultures of the companies were all different. I have found that there is a great difference in the both the behaviors of people and of their organizations, depending on whether they are state-owned enterprises (SOEs), large multinational firms, or small to medium sized foreign enterprises. One simple example is that of the ability of an employee to act independently without direct instructions from his or her boss. In many Chinese organizations, acting without direct instructions is considered a form of disrespect towards the supervisor, who is generally offended by such behavior. In my experience and research, such organizations tend to have low operating efficiency with the employees losing their innate ability to take the initiative.
In contrast, foreign enterprises tend to welcome employees who have the ability to make decisions on their own, though the extent to which this is true depends on whether the supervisor is a local Chinese or an expatriate.
The purpose behind this personal statement is to not only gain admission to your well-established and highly respected Ph.D. program, but to impress upon you my passion for learning and my tremendous desire to succeed in both scholastic research and in teaching on the professional level. I have based my decision to pursue an academic career not on purely practical reasons, but rather on my own natural interests and aptitude. My personal philosophy is that money and social status should not be pursued as life-consuming objectives and that in actuality they are the by-products of goals originating from one's inner needs. I understand that my intellectual capacity is a gift, and I intend to use this gift to the very best of my substantial capabilities.
