More and more people like bicycling. It is fun, healthy and good for the environment. Maybe that’s why there are 1.4 billion bicycles and only 400 million cars on roads worldwide today. Bikes can take you almost anywhere, and there is no oil cost!

●Bicycling helps to control your weight.

A 15-minute bike ride to and from work three times a week burns off five kilos of fat in a year.

Hu Muqing, 16, of Shenyang, complains that his parents only care about his grades and not his other needs. He and his parents fight the most about the time he spends watching TV and on the Internet. The Shenyang teenager said, “They think I should concentrate on my work because I’m in middle school. However, I need to be able to relax. Most of my friends can watch TV and surf the Web a lot. Sometimes it’s hard to talk to them.” After some negotiations (商談), Hu has been allowed to watch TV for 15 to 20 minutes every night, but has been told to keep away from the computer.

Shen Ying, 17, of Jianyang, Sichuan Province, feels she has grown up now. So she wants more resp ect(尊重) from her parents. “My father shouted at me when he’s in a bad mood. It’s the age when teenagers are becoming more independent, but their parents care very much about their kids’ futures, said Sun Yunxiao, a senior researcher at the China Youth and Children Research Center. On Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, say ‘Thank you’ to your parents or give them a small gift with a letter so they can get inside your head a little,” he advised. Sun also believes that teenagers have to work to get trust and respect from their parents. “You need to make sure they know that you’ re not going to screw up(搞砸) your exams or let them down. Let them know that you want to do well, and that you will do well” he said.

  X.任務(wù)型閱讀 閱讀短文,按要求完成各題。(5分)

Richard John Roberts is the winner of the 1993 Nobel Prize in Physiology or medicine. Richard was born in Derby, England on September 6, 1943. When he was four, Roberts’ family moved to Bath. The following is what he remembers about his time in a small school in Bath.

“From age eight to eleven, I attended a small school in Bath, England. It was a small school of four classes with about twenty-five children in each class according to age. For the most part, one teacher had to teach all subjects to the children in the class. However, sometimes the headmaster, Mr. Ronald Broaches, would come in and spend an hour or so, teaching some subjects in which he was especially interested. He was a large man with a very happy nature. He had a sense of humor(幽默感) and enjoyed telling the children small stories that would make us laugh. He was a very fair man and had a great influence on many of the children. In my own case, I found that he took great interest in me and he quickly found that I enjoyed puzzles(難題). He would often stop me as I was going to class and take a piece of paper out of his pocket(口袋), often with a puzzle already on it. As time went on, the puzzles slowly got more difficult, but I loved them. Not only that, they made me interested in math and problem solving that stays with me to this day. They also served to show me that intellectual(智力的) activity was rewarding when the correct answers were found, but perhaps more importantly it was great fun. To this day, I can still remember Mr. Broaches’ cheerful cry of “Well done!” whenever I got a problem right. The simple communication with a man whom I loved greatly has had a deep influence on my life. I shall forever be thankful that our paths crossed. Mr. Broaches died just two weeks after I had won the 1993 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Unluckily, I had no chance to speak to him before he died. I learnt later that he had heard of my success and I will always hope that he knew the deep influence he had made on my life.”
