While Andrew was getting ready for work one Friday morning, he announced to his wife that he had finally decided to ask his boss for a salary raise. All day Andrew felt nervous and anxious as he thought about the upcoming showdown. What if Mr. Larchmont refused to grant his request? Andrew had worked so hard in the last 18 months and landed some great accounts for Braer and Hopkins Advertising Agency. Of course, he deserved a wage increase.

The thought of walking into Larchmont’s office left Andrew weak in the knees. Late in the afternoon he was finally courageous enough to approach his superior. To his delight and surprise, the ever-frugal(一向節(jié)儉的)Harvey Larchmont agreed to give Andrew a raise!

Andrew arrived home that evening—despite breaking all city and state speed limits—to a beautiful table set with their best china, and candles lit. His wife, Tina, had prepared a delicate meal including his favorite dishes. Immediately he figured someone from the office had tipped her off!

Next to his plate Andrew found a beautiful lettered note. It was from his wife. It read: “Congratulations, my love! I knew you’d get the raise! I prepared this dinner to show just how much I love you. I am so proud of your accomplishments!” He read it and stopped to reflect on how sensitive and caring Tina was.

After dinner, Andrew was on his way to the kitchen to get dessert when he observed that a second card had slipped out of Tina’s pocket onto the floor. He bent forward to pick it up. It read: “Don’t worry about not getting the raise! You do deserve one! You are a wonderful provider and I prepared this dinner to show you just how much I love you even though you did not get the increase.”

Suddenly tears swelled in Andrew’s eyes. Total acceptance! Tina’s support for him was not conditional upon his success at work.

The fear of rejection is often softened and we can undergo almost any setback or rejection when we know someone loves us regardless of our success or failure.

  41. What was Andrew’s plan that Friday?

  A. To get a job with the Braer and Hopkins Advertising Agency.

  D. Andrew’s boss agreed to his request.

  44. Why did Tina prepare a grand dinner for Andrew that day?

  A. She was confident of his getting a pay raise.

  B. She believed that her husband was the best in his company.

The weather affects many aspects of people’s daily life. Knowing and understanding what the weather is doing is useful.

However, the weather is also one of the most unpredictable elements in the world. Although many people watch the morning news and gather the information about the weather, this is often wrong. Whole days can be ruined by believing that the weather will be one thing, when it turns out to be another. However, owning wireless weather stations allows the owners to monitor the weather for themselves.

Not only will these weather stations allow the owners to see what the weather is doing, but it is personalized to them and their area. Wireless weather stations are specifically prepared for the immediate neighborhood. Plans will be able to be made, and important decisions will no longer be ruined by bad weather.

Although these weather stations are typically seen in homes, they can also be used very easily on farms and fishing boats. Both farmers and fishermen rely on the weather for their business and using up-to-date weather information is quite indispensable. By using the wireless weather stations, it can determine for them when to harvest crops and head back to the shore. Due to the size of the weather stations, they can be moved very easily and used wherever is necessary for people.

The wireless weather stations are great for all homes, especially for areas that suffer from extreme weather conditions.

The up-to-date, instant weather reports will allow a person to monitor what the weather is doing and if the bad weather is heading in their direction. Extreme weather tends to come very quickly, therefore, any information that is received is helpful.

The weather stations are very simple to set up and are run by solar panels(太陽能電池板),ensuring they will work even if there is a power cut. They are far smaller than those in previous years and give a couple of very simple read-outs for the owner. They are easy to use and fascinating to understand.

  D. It can continue to work even if there is a power failure.

  49. From the passage, we know.

  A. it’s hard to apply the weather stations to farms and fishing boats now

  B. people never considered weather when making plans and important decisions

  C. children, unlike adults, learned more about the weather and environment

We often think of the great inventors such as Thomas Edison or Steve Jobs as the “creative”. Or we read stories like that of Elizabeth Holmes, who developed a simpler, less painful way to test blood, which has turned her into the youngest female billionaire in the world.

Creativity and innovation(革新)in the day-to-day life start with looking at things differently and taking on the perspectives(觀點(diǎn)) of the others. After you’ve taken the view of the others, start testing. New perspectives on problems can give you lots of ideas about how to improve things, but until you try some of those ideas you will never know which is the right choice. Don’t get stuck in analyzing all of your options without testing at least some of them first. If testing isn’t really feasible(可行的)with your specific situation, talk to a number of different people about your ideas and problems.

Once you have the data and feedback, give yourself some space to think. One thing we can learn from some of the great creative thinkers of our time is that they take time away from work to think and let their ideas develop. There is a story of Newton who mistook his watch for an egg and had it boiling while he was lost in thought in his workshop. Creativity and innovation aren’t just for the special few who are blessed with the insight into future. We can’t all be like Henry Ford, knowing that while customers say they want faster horses, what they really want are powered cars. But we can learn to develop creative thinking in everything we do.

Talk to others about your perspective and the importance of testing and feedback and show your passion for innovating in all areas to get help fromthem. That good mindset, along with your ability to follow through, will accelerate your success.

  51. What is the similarity of the great people according to Paragraph 1?

  A. They earned a lot of money later.

  B. They worked hard and never gave up.

  C. They had new ideas and methods.

  D. They spent a lot of time thinking.

  52. You need to test the new perspectives you get in order to .

  A. know how to make things better

  B. let others handle the problems

  C. find out incorrect perspectives

D.change your view of the world

53.What is special about Henry Ford?

  A.He truly understands customers’ demands.

  B. He likes to compare the horses with cars.

  C. He does what the customers tell him.

  D. He has a creative and brilliant team.

  54. How did the author explain his ideas in Paragraph3?

  A. By listing figures.

  B.By following the time order.

  C. By analyzing cause and effect.

  D. By giving some examples.

55.The author writes this passage mainly to tell readers.

  A.the spirit of great people

  B. how to become creative

  C.how to become successful

  D.the importance of creativity

Mount Everest(珠穆朗瑪峰)is the highest mountain in the world. This mountain is located in Asia. Asia is the home to all five of the world’s highest mountains. Mount Everest’s peak is five and one-half miles above sea level. That is very high!

Many climbers have tried to climb to the peak of Mount Everest. The first people to reach the peak were Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. Since then, about 900 people have survived the climb to Mount Everest’s summit.

One of the most successful climbers is Erik Weihenmayer. Like all who try to climb this huge mountain, Erik faced strong winds, snow, and avalanches(雪崩). However, what really made Erik’s climb unbelievable is the fact that he is blind. After losing his sight at age 13, Erik began climbing at age 16. He has climbed the tallest mountains on five continents. Erik became the first blind person to reach the peak of Mount Everest.

At the age of 32, Erik began his climb as part of a 19-member team. His team wore bells that he could follow using his climb. By using them, fellow climbers could quickly warn him of such things as a big drop on the right or a big stone to the left.

During his climb, Erik faced many dangers. He struggled through 100m. p. h winds and sliding(滑動(dòng)的)masses of snow, ice, and rock. Because the air became thinner the higher Erick climbed, he wore an oxygen mask, as do many who climb high mountains. It took Erik about two and a half months to reach the top of this huge mountain.

  46. From Paragraph 2, the author intends to

  B. It is hard to set up but can be moved from one place to another.

  C. It is economical and saves money in the long run.

  D. It can continue to work even if there is a power failure.

  49. From the passage, we know.

  A. it’s hard to apply the weather stations to farms and fishing boats now

  B. people never considered weather when making plans and important decisions

  C. children, unlike adults, learned more about the weather and environment

  D. bad and unexpected weather brought great trouble to people’s daily life

  D

  D. They spent a lot of time thinking.

  52. You need to test the new perspectives you get in order to .

  A. know how to make things better
