Mistakes that Worked, written by Charlotte FoltzJones,award-winning author of non-fiction books for children, offers forty of these unusual tales, along with many interesting drawings and strange and amazing facts.
The book is divided into six parts:food, medicine, toys, accidental things, names, and I find the book great because if not for the book,I would never have known that something was actually accidentally created.Besides,I like to learn real information;I can't stand books with stories that aren't real.Although this is a non-fiction book and is aboutinventions,it is not a history of technology book;it's more of an easy reading book. This bookwould be attractive to both boys and girls, and it could actually be either an adult book or a children’sbook.
Published in 1991,the book is a bit old and is showing its age now in 2016.Still,it contains lots of great information, even though some facts are not exact.I love the idea of a mistakes book, and I especially like the format, which allows readers to dip in and out of the book easily. However, the entries are not all equally strong. Additionally, if you don’t live in the US,the book makes little sense, since it is full of American references both historically and in terms of customs.
Anyway,Mistakes that Worked is a reminder that failure is not always the end.It is an enlightening book that encourages us to realize that taking risks and learning to experiment is often the best way to learn, even if we don’t end up creating something new and wonderful.
21.What kind ofbook is Mistakes that Worked?
A.It's a picture book. B.It's a science book. C.It's an adult book. D.It's a historical book.
22.What can we infer about the author?
A.He reads too little. B.He is a slow reader.
C.He is a great reader of non-fiction. D.He enjoys reading books about inventions.
23.Which ofthe following does the author especially like about the book?
A.Its facts. B.Its organization. C.Its entries. D.Its reference.
24.What is the author's opinion on the book?
A.It's a fun read. B.It's a perfect book. C.It makes little sense. D.It's full of factual mistake

It's common for students to hear the same standard, cliched advice:"dream big","follow yours dreams",and "reach for the stars." But Student of the Year judge Alien Ma has something abit different to add—"be practical".
The judge knows a thing or two about both big dreams and practical applications, and has seen plenty of students achieve both.
"We are looking to nurture talents,in this case technology talents, says Ma,CEO of Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP). "When someone has this kind of crazy idea or brilliant idea—sometimes you can’t tell the difference—they need to find somebody to help them realize their dream."
And with all the big and sometimes crazy ideas Ma has heard from students through HKSTP,he says it is important to find a balance between creative ideas and practical applications. And part of this means being able to see the benefit of patience and long-term goals.
Ma says he sees many students try to get good marks through easy classes, rather than challenging themselves with harder courses that will pay off with knowledge that would be useful for their future.
"You should be looking out for your future,"he says.
And for secondary school students,Ma says this means having a broad understanding of the world around them, especially as it relates to Science,Technology,Engineering and Maths (Stem)knowledge.
"I think a lot of students today have this broad, sometimes international understanding,"he says.Ma sees many strong students using their knowledge to help others. And for him, these are the students that really stand out from the crowd,as they're making the connection between their knowledge and how they fit into the world around them."They don’t just study, they’re not just scholars,"he says."They are good scholars, but also good sports players or good musicians, for example, but they also give back to society. That’s what impresses me the most."
28.What do the underlined words mean in Para1?
A.Do not dream big any more. B.Realizing dreams is equally important.
C.The standard advice is no longer useful. D.Anyone who dreams big is great.
29.Why does Ma think students need help in realizing their dreams?
A.They are short of patience. B.They can't balance study and life well.
C.They are far away from being practical. D.They can’t tell crazy and bright ideas apart.
30.What is Ma' suggestion for students nowadays?
A.Set a goal. B.Fit into society. C.Begin with easy classes. D.Take the long-term view.
31.What kind of feeling does Ma express in the last paragraph?
A.Politeness. B.Inspiration. C.Admiration. D.Hopefulness.

As Artificial Intelligence(A)becomes increasingly sophisticated, there are growing concerns that robots could become a threat. This danger can be avoided, according to computer science professor Stuart Russell,if we figure out how to turn human values into a programmable code.
Russell argues that as robots take on more complicated tasks,it’s necessary to translate our morals into AI language.
For example,if a robot does chores around the house, you wouldn't want it to put the pet cat in the oven to make dinner for the hungry children. "You would want that robot preloaded with a good set of values," said Russell.
Some robots are already programmed with basic human values. For example, mobile robots have been programmedto keep a comfortable distance from humans.Obviously there are cultural differences, but if you were talking to another person and they came up close in your personal space, you wouldn't think that's the kind of thing a properly brought-up person would do.
It will be possible to create more sophisticated moral machines,if only we can find a way to set out human values as clear rules.
Robots could also learn values from drawing patterns from large sets of data on human behavior. They are dangerous only if programmers are careless.
The biggest concern with robots going against human values is that human beings fail to do sufficient testing and they've produced a system that will break some kind of taboo(禁忌).
One simple check would be to program a robot to check the correct course of action with a human when presented with an unusual situation.
If the robot is unsure whether an animal is suitable for the microwave,it has the opportunity to stop, send out beeps, and ask for directions from a human. If we humans aren't quite sure about a decision,we go and ask somebody else.
The most difficult step in programming values will be deciding exactly what we believe in moral, and how to create a set of ethical rules. But if we come up with an answer, robots could be good for humanity.
32.What does the author say about the threat of robots?
A.It may be a challenge to computer programmers.
B.It accompanies all machinery involving high technology.
C.It can be avoided if human values are translated into their language.
D.It has become an inevitable danger as technology gets more sophisticated.
33.How do robots learn human values?
A.By interacting with humans in everyday life situations.
B.By following the daily routines of civilized human beings.
C.By picking up patterns from massive data on human behavior.
D.By imitating the behavior of properly brought-up human beings.
34.What will a well-programmed robot do when facing an unusual situation?
A.Keep a distance from possible dangers. B.Do sufficient testing before taking action.
C.Set off its built-in alarm system at once. D.Stop to seek advice from a human being.
35.What is most difficult to do when we turn human values into a programmable code?
A.Determine what is moral and ethical. B.Design some large-scale experiments.
C.Set rules for man-machine interaction. D.Develop a more sophisticated program.

Text 1
M: Only two days left until summer break! What are your plans,Jessica?
W: I’m off to Canada for a camping trip.(1) What about you,Sam?
M: I think I’ll stay here and relax.
Text 2
W: What are you guys laughing at?
M: It’s this new movie called The Internship. It’s very funny.(2)
Text 3
M: I’m afraid we’ll have to cancel the trip,Grace.
W: Yeah, this is much more important. You’ll have to go to the funeral. He was your uncle.(3)
Text 4
W: Benjamin promised to come for our party if he has time.
M:He often does it,but he never seems to have time.So you had better not take his words seriously, otherwise you will get disappointed later.(4)
Text 5
W: I often mistake Mark for Tom in class. Can you tell them apart?
M: No.They are twins, and many teachers make the same mistake like us.It is really a little embarrassing to make mistakes all the time in face of so many students.
Text 6
M: Look at all this bread! French,Italian…it all looks really good.I don’t know when America started its bread revolution, but I’m sure glad it happened.I could eat bread all day!
W: Me,too. This isn’t the kind of bread we ate when we were young. That sliced bread had more artificial things in it than you can count! (6)
M: Yeah, but our parents didn’t realize it was so unhealthy. These days, you can find a lot of freshly-bakedbread with only four or five ingredients.
W: So,what are we going to buy? That long loaf of dark bread looks really good.
M: I’d rather have something lighter and thicker so I can make a nice big sandwich with it.(7)
Text 7
M:Look at this place! If I didn’t know it was the city I grew up in,I’d swear I was somewhere else!(8)
W: Yeah…so many houses are empty or broken down.It wasn’t like this when we were kids.
M: We used to play ball in the streets all the time, but it looks so dangerous now.
W: And ugly.Look at all that trash in the streets.(9) The wind just pushes it along. What a lonely place!
M: This used to be a great city.People came from miles around to work in the shops and eat in the restaurants. What a sad sight! I guess when the glass making industry decided to move across the country where it’s cheaper, the quality of life here went away, too.
W: Yeah, let’s go.There’s nothing left for us here.I’m getting depressed.
Text 8
W: George, why are you a vegetarian? Your whole family eats meat, except you.I can’t imagine how you chose to live this way.
M: Oh,it happened a long time ago when I was about ten years old.We had some friends who lived on a small farm. They had chickens, goats, sheep, and a few cows.(11) One time,we were invited over for dinner. We came early so we could play before we ate.I was running around the yard with my friends, when I saw the father preparing the meal.He had just caught a chicken and was cutting off its head.I felt very sick when I saw him do it.(12) After that,I would think about the poor chicken every time I ate meat. I ate less and less meat, until I stopped for good when I was twelve years old.(10)
W: I see. What did your parents think about your decision?
M: Well, since it didn’t happen all at once, they probably learned to accept that I would be a vegetarian. It wasn’t easy for them — especially for Mom,who had to cook differently for me.

M: Mom,I haven’t been able to stop thinking about the food in India.Ever since I got back from my trip,I’ve been dying for some real Indian food.(13) But there’s nothing around here.No restaurantsserve the kinds of dishes I ate there.I’d have to go to a big city to find anything that comes close. In our town, they don’t even make spicy food!
W: Well,Drew,why don’t you try making your own? (14)
M: I wish I could! But I wouldn’t know where to start.
W: I’ll help you look online for some recipes.
M: How will we know which ones are good?
W:We’ll try them,of course! After some practice,we’ll be able to tell which ones we’ll like best.
M:But I doubt we’ll find everything we need in the grocery stores.I’m sure they use many unusual spices in India.
W: We will start simply.I know I’ve seen some Thai spices at the market — maybe some of them will be useful. If we find that those aren’t enough,we can order some online. There must be Indian grocery stores somewhere in America that will ship them.(15) If worse comes to worst,I’ll ask my brother in New York to look around.(16) He should be able to find a place that sells Indian spices!
M: Thanks,Mom! (16) This is gonna be fun! I can’t wait to start cooking!

Whoever dreamed up the idea of a subway knew what it means to live in a city.Study the faces of the subway riders, and you’ll see what I mean. They are all traveling in a busy world that exists under another busy world. The New York subway is one of the largest public transportation systems in the world. It is also one of the oldest—it has been underneath this city for 110 years now.(17) I’ve been riding it for half that time. When I was a kid, there wasn’t any fear—only adventure.Subways were for dreaming. And I would stand at the window of the front car and dream through the great network of tunnels, watching the red and green lights go by.A subway is like a secret,a child’s game. You go in one hole and you come out another. You move fast—much faster than a taxi,or walking or running.Years ago,a woman named Rosie Ruiz tried to steal a victory in the New York marathon by taking a subway to the finish line.(18) Rosie was right. The subway was faster. In the 1960s,the subway got to be a dangerous place.(19) Subways have been made a great deal safer since then.I think what people like most about the subway, apart from basic transportation, still comes from the magic feeling of rushing around fast in a train underground.(20)
