The detectors, sold for up to ,000 each, were said to be able to find such dangerous objects as bombs under water and from the air. But in fact they "lacked any grounding in science" and were of no use.

Home to me means a sense of familiarity and nostalgia(懷舊). It's fun to come home. It looks the same. It smells the same. You'll realize what's changed is you. Home is where we ran remember pain, live, and some other experiences; We parted here; My parents met here; I won three championships here.
If I close my eyes, I can still have a clear picture in mind of my first home. I walk in the door and see a brown sofa surrounding a low glass-top wooden table. To the right of the living room is my first bedroom. It's empty, but it's where my earliest memories are.
There is the dining room table where I celebrated birthdays, and where I cried on Halloween-when I didn't want to wear the skirt my mother made for me. I always liked standing on that table because it made me feel tall and strong. If I sit at this table, I can see my favorite room in the house, my parents' room. It is simple: a brown wooden dresser lines the right side of the wall next to a television and a couple of photos of my grandparents on each side. Their bed is my safe zone. I can jump on it anytime - waking up my parents if I am scared or if I have an important announcement that cannot wait until the morning.
I'm lucky because I know my first home still exists. It exists in my mind and heart, on a physical property(住宅) on West 64th street on the western edge of Los Angeles. It is proof I lived, I grew and I learned.
Sometimes when I feel lost, I lie down and shut my eyes, and I go home. I know it's where I'll find my family, my dogs, and my belongings. Fear may be felt in the heart as well as in the head, according to a study that has found a link between the cycles of a beating heart and the chance of someone feeling fear.
Tests on healthy volunteers found that they were more likely to feel a sense of fear at the moment when their hearts are contracting(收縮) and pumping blood around their bodies, compared with the point when the heartbeat is relaxed. Scientists say the results suggest that the heart is able to influence how the brain responds to a fearful event, depending on which point it is at in its regular cycle of contraction and relaxation.
Sarah Garfinkel at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School said: "Our study shows for the first time that the way in which we deal with fear is different depending on when we see fearful pictures in relation to our heart."
The study tested 20 healthy volunteers on their reactions to fear as they were shown pictures of fearful faces. Dr Garfinkel said, "The study showed that fearful faces are better noticed when the heart is pumping than when it is relaxed. Thus our hearts can also affect what we see and what we don't see - and guide whether we see fear."
To further understand this relationship, the scientists also used a brain scanner(掃描儀) to show how the brain influences the way the heart changes a person's feeling of fear.
"We have found an important mechanism by which the heart and brain ‘speak’to each other to change our feelings and reduce fear," Dr Garfinkel said.
"We hope that by increasing our understanding about how fear is dealt with and ways that it could be reduced, we may be able to develop more successful treatments for anxiety disorders, and also for those for those who may be suffering from serious stress disorder."
47. What is the finding of the study?
A. One's heart affects how he feels fear.
B. fear is a result of one's relaxed heartbeat.
C. fear has something to do with one's health.
D. Ones fast heartbeats are likely to cause fear.
48. The study was carried out by analyzing _______.
A. volunteers' heartbeats when they saw terrible pictures
B. the time volunteers saw fearful pictures and their health conditions
C. volunteers' reactions to horrible pictures and data form their brain scans
D. different pictures shown to volunteers and their heart-brain communication
49. Which of the following is closest in meaning to "mechanism" in Paragraph 6?
A. Order. B. system. C. Machine. D. Treatment.
50.This study may contribute to _______.
A. treating anxiety and stress better
B. explaining the cycle of fear and anxiety
C. finding the sky to the heart-brain communication
D. understanding different fears in our hearts and heads

1. A. I really envy you. B. Glad to hear that. C. Sounds great. D. Take it easy.
A 選項(xiàng)“one” 表泛指,D 選項(xiàng)“it” 表示同類同物,C 選項(xiàng)“this” 不能用于類比的結(jié)構(gòu)之中,故正確答案為C。
A 選項(xiàng)“or” 意為“否則”;B 選項(xiàng)“and” 意為“并且”,表順接;C 選項(xiàng)“but” 意為“但是”,表轉(zhuǎn)折;D 選項(xiàng)“so” 意為“所以”。
“even if”意為“盡管,即使”,“as if”意為“好像”,“because”意為“因?yàn)?rdquo;,“before”意為“在……
(The girl is) not knowing which university to attend, (so) the girl asked her teacher for advice.
由“next year”可判斷動作尚未發(fā)生,應(yīng)該用非謂語動詞中的不定式to do 結(jié)構(gòu),故正確答案為B。
11. A. Hat 帽子,B. scarf 頭巾,C .scars 傷痕、傷疤,D. cuts 割傷、劃傷,從后文得知男孩是被燙油燒傷,所以頭上應(yīng)該是傷痕,也可以從下文“But she’ll be____with scars on her head.”
12. A.Still 仍然,B.just 僅僅,C.never 從不,D.seldom 幾乎不,從前面的eventhough 引導(dǎo)的讓步狀語從句可以看出作者仍然覺得聽到那些外號覺得糟糕,所以答案是A。
14. A.Be rushed to 被緊急送到,B.be led to 被帶到,C.be invited to 被邀請到,D.be forced to 被迫到,作者燒傷后,應(yīng)該是被緊急送到醫(yī)院,所以答案是A。
15. A. Learn to do 學(xué)習(xí)做,B. fight to do 努力做、拼命做,C. return to do 返回做,D.decide to do 決定做,根據(jù)文意,應(yīng)該是醫(yī)生努力地拯救了我的生命,而不是才學(xué)著做或者入院幾周了才決定拯救作者的生命,所以答案是B。
17. A .Be pressed with 窘迫于,B.be occupied with 忙于,C. be left with 被留下,D. be painted with 被畫上,本題應(yīng)該是頭上留下了傷痕,所以答案是C。
21. A.Be promoted to 被提拔為,B.be introduced to 被引薦到,被介紹到,C.be reported to 被報道為,D.be carriedto 被帶到,作者是挺別人介紹去的兒童燒傷夏令營,所以答案是B。
