I grew up in a house where the TV was seldom turned on and with one wall in my bedroom entirely lined with bookshelves, most of my childhood was spent on books I could get hold of. In fact, I grew up thinking of reading as natural as breathing and books unbelievably powerful in shaping perspectives (觀點) by creating worlds we could step into, take part in and live in.

With this unshakable belief, I, at fourteen, decided to become a writer. Here too, reading became useful. Every writer starts off knowing that he has something to say, but being unable to find the right ways to say it. He has to find his own voice by reading widely and discovering which parts of the writers he agrees or disagrees with, or agrees with so strongly that it reshapes his own world. He cannot write without loving to read, because only through reading other people’s writing can one discover what works, what doesn’t and, in the end, together with lots of practice, what voice he has.

Now I am in college, and have come to realize how important it is to read fiction (文學(xué)作品).As a law student, my reading is in fact limited to subject matter—the volume (量) of what I have to read for classes every week means there is little time to read anything else. Such reading made it all the clearer to me that I live in a very small part in this great place called life. Reading fiction reminds me that there is life beyond my own. It allows me to travel across the high seas and along the Silk Road, all from the comfort of my own armchair, to experience, though secondhand, exciting experiences that I wouldn't necessarily be able to have in my lifetime.

  21. What can be inferred about the author as a child?

  A. He never watched TV. B. He read what he had to.

  C. He found reading unbelievable. D. He considered reading part of his life.

  22. The underlined word “voice” in the second paragraph most probably means “ ”.

  A. an idea B. a sound quality

  C. a way of writing D. a world to write about

  23. What effect does reading have on the author?

  A. It helps him to realize his dream. B. It opens up a wider world for him.

  C. It makes his college life more interesting. D. It increases his interest in worldwide travel.

  24. Which of the following can be the best title of this text?

  A. Why do I read? B. How do I read?

  C. What do I read? D. When do I read?

Make Up Your Mind to Succeed

Kind-hearted parents have unknowingly left their children defenseless against failure. The generation born between 1980 and 2001 grew up playing sports where scores and performance were played down because “everyone’s winner.” And their report cards sounded more positive (正面的) than ever before. As a result, Stanford University professor Carol Dweck, PhD, calls them “the overpraised generation.”

Dweck has been studying how people deal with failure for 40 years. Her research has led her to find out two clearly different mind-sets that have a great effect on how we react to it. Here’s how they work:

A fixed mind-set is grounded in the belief that talent (才能) is genetic – you’re a born artist, point guard, or numbers person. The fixed mind-set believes it’s sure to succeed without much effort and regards failure as personal shame. When things get difficult, it’s quick to blame, lie, and even stay away from future difficulties.

On the other hand, a growth mind-set believes that no talent is entirely heaven-sent and that effort and learning make everything possible. Because the ego (自尊;自我意識) isn’t on the line as much, the growth mind-set sees failure as a chance rather than shame. When faced with a difficulty, it’s quick to rethink, change and try again. In fact, it enjoys this experience.

We are all born with growth mind-sets. (Otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to live in the world.) But parents, teachers, and instructors often push us into fixed mind-sets by encouraging certain actions and misdirecting praise. Dweck’s book, Mind-set: The New Psychology of Success, and online instructional program explain this in depth. But she says there are many little things you can start doing today to make sure that your children, grandchildren and even you are never defeated by failure.

  25. A fixed mind-set person is probably one who ___ .

  A. cares a lot about personal safety B. doesn’t want to work hard

  C. cannot share his ideas with others D. can succeed with the help of teachers

  26. What does the growth mind-set believe?

  A. Getting over difficulties is enjoyable. B. Admitting failure is shameful.

  C. Talent comes with one’s birth. D. Scores should be highly valued.

  27. What should parents do for their children based on Dweck’s study?

  A. Prevent them from making mistakes. B. Guide them in doing little things.

  C. Help them grow with praise. D. Encourage them to learn from failures.

  C

Liverpool, my hometown, is a unique city. It is so unique that in 2004 it became a World Heritage(遺產(chǎn)) Site.

I recently returned to my home city and my first stop was at a museum on the River Mersey. Blanketed in mist(薄霧), Victorian architecture rose from the banks of the river, responded to the sounds of sea-birds, and appeared unbelievably charming. When I headed toward the centre, I found myself surrounded by buildings that mirror the best palaces of Europe. It is not hard to imagine why, on first seeing the city, most visitors would be overpowered by the beauty of the noble buildings, which are solid signs of Liverpool’s history.

As if to stress its cultural role, Liverpool has more museums and galleries(美術(shù)館) than most cities in Britain. At Walker Art Gallery, I was told that it has the best collections of Victorian paintings in the world, and is the home of modern art in the north of England. However, culture is more than galleries. Liverpool offers many music events. As Britain’s No.1 music city, it has the biggest city music festival in Europe, and its musicians are famous all over the world. Liverpool is also well-known for its football and other sports events. Every year, the Mersey River Festival attracts thousands of visitors, making the city a place of wonder.

As you would expect from such a city, there are restaurants serving food from around the world. When my trip was about to complete, I chose to rest my legs in Liverpool’s famous Philharmonic pub(酒館). It is a monument to perfection, and a heritage attraction itself.

Being a World Heritage Site, my home city is certainly a place of “outstanding universal value”. It is a treasure house with plenty of secrets for the world to explore.

  28. Visitors who see the city for the first time would be deeply impressed by________

  A. its charming banks B. its famous museums

  C. its attractive buildings D. its wonderful palaces

  29. The third paragraph is developed mainly by______

  A. following the order of space B. providing different examples

  C. making comparisons D. analyzing causes

  30. The author uses the Philharmonic pub to prove that_______

  A. Liverpool is an impressive place full of attraction

  B. Liverpool is a well-known city for its restaurants

  C. a pub is a wonderful place for visitors to relax themselves

  D. a pub is a perfect choice for visitors to complete their journey

  第二節(jié)(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

  根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。

The long years of food shortage in Britain have suddenly given way to huge food supply. Stores and shops are crowded with food. Rationing(定量供應(yīng)) has already seemed too distant to today’s Britons. Even overseas suppliers have been asked to hold back deliveries. Yet, instead of joy, there is widespread uneasiness and worries. Why do food prices keep on rising, when there seems to be so much more food about? Is the surface huge amount of food only temporary, or has it come to stay? Does it mean that we need to think less now about producing more food at home?

  __32__

The recent growth of food supply on the world food market has certainly been unexpectedly great, partly because two continuous big grain harvests in North America are now being followed by a third. Most of Britain’s overseas suppliers of meat, too, are offering more this year and home production has also risen.

The reasons for the problematic food situation in Britain

__33__ On the one hand, the British government has gradually cut down support for food. On the other hand, the shops are overstocked with food not only because there is more food available, but also because people, frightened by high prices, are buying less of it.

The different situations at home and abroad

Moreover, the rise in food prices at home has come at a time when world prices have begun to fall, with the result that imported food, with the exception of grain, is often cheaper than the home-produced variety.__34__British consumers are beginning to ask why they should not be able to benefit from this trend.

The effect of the situation on farmers

The significance of these developments is not lost on farmers. The older generations have seen it all happen before. Despite the present price and market guarantees, farmers fear they are about to be squeezed between cheap food imports and a smaller home market. Present production is running quickly compared with years ago.__35__.

  A. Then why is the food situation in Britain still faulty?

  B. However, farmers haven’t shared any benefit from the change.

  C. The variety of British food

  D. The surface richness of food and questions it brings

  E. And now grain prices, too, are falling internationally.

  F. The recent reason for the huge supply of food

  G. How to buy food in Britain
