A
I’m very proud of my son, who is considerate and has a loving heart.
When my son was 11 years old, he got a small job helping out with a traveling carnival in our town. He didn’t come home at lunch time, phoning instead to tell me he was fine and had found a few days’ work helping out at an exhibit. He turned up for supper as usual however after he finished work.
I asked him how he had managed at lunch and he told me he had made some new friends at the carnival, some young men who were twin brothers, and their mom and dad. They had paid him a few dollars and invited him for lunch in return for helping them set up their exhibit and wanted him to return the next day to help with other chores (雜務(wù)).
I was glad he had found new friends but a little worried about the type of people who might be traveling in a carnival. "Oh, Mom, these are just normal everyday people like anyone else. They just work at a carnival instead of in a store or something". "Come down tomorrow and meet them yourself," he said.
So the next day I went to the carnival and to the exhibit he had directed me to. The twin brothers turned out to be Siamese (連體的) twins, joined at the chest. He hadn’t thought this fact was noteworthy enough to mention. When I brought it to him, he said, "Yes, I noticed that too. Do you know that their mom has to make all their clothes because it’s so difficult to find anything to fit them? They’re also really good cooks. Today, Joe, the one on the right, made me spaghetti (意大利面條) for lunch."
What others see first in a person is not what a child considers important. Where I saw Siamese twins, he saw people having difficulty buying clothes that fit, and young men who were good cooks. It was a lesson I have thought about many times over the years.

With the Rio Olympic games going on, cupping(拔罐)is becoming well known all over the world.
Cupping comes in several forms. With dry cupping, therapists(特定療法的技師) use cups that stick to, but don’t break, the skin. They can use cups with mechanical devices, such as hand or electrical pumps, to create suction(吸). Or they can use fire cups, which use their heat for suction.
In wet cupping, a therapist will first puncture the skin using what looks like a toothbrush with little needles; the suction cups slowly fill with blood.
The basic idea is that creating bruises(淤青)will encourage the body to heal more quickly in those targeted areas.
Whether you’re a world-class athlete competing in the Rio Olympics, or a journalist, back and neck pain can be real occupational hazards(職業(yè)病困擾).
To treat their sore muscles, U.S. competitors like famous swimmer Michael Phelps and gymnast Alex Naddour have all turned to an ancient form of treatment called cupping.
The technique involves placing small glass cups on the skin, then pulling them from the body to relax the muscles and boost blood flow.
The suction cups leave behind circular bruises, like the ones Phelps showed off on Sunday night in the men’s freestyle relay finals.
While cupping is a relatively common pain treatment in Eastern cultures, it’s still a rare and little-studied practice in the United States.
But with Olympians showing off their purple discs like gold medals, cupping could soon be very popular with athletes, desk jockeys and other Americans suffering bone, joint and muscle pain, said Dr. Charles Kim, a specialist at New York University’s Langone Medical Center.
“Perhaps something like this will open up the American public and maybe encourage further research and oversight of cupping as a potential(潛在的) treatment,” he told Mashable.
54. How many ways of cupping altogether are mentioned in the paragraph?
A.One. B. Three C. Five D. Seven
55. What does the underlined word “puncture” in the second paragraph probably mean?
A.making cuts on the skin with a knife
B.making tiny holes in the skin with sharp points
C.making not serious burns on the skin with fire
D.making clear bruises on the skin with a suction cup
56. Which of the following is correct according to the passage?
A.Americans have carefully studied the treatment with cupping.
B.Cutting is a very popular treatment in the western world.
C.Alex Naddour is a science reporter who has written a lot of reports about cupping.
D.In wet cupping, therapists still use hand pumps or fire to create suction.

Advertisements(廣告)are seen everywhere in our daily life.
The word advertising refers to any kind of public announcement that brings products and services to the attention of people. Throughout history, advertising has been an effective way to promote (促進(jìn)) the trading and selling of goods. In the Middle Ages, merchants employed town criers to read the public messages aloud to promote their goods. When printing was invented in the fifteenth century, pages of advertisements (ads) could be printed easily and were either hung in public places or put in books.
By the end of the seventeenth century, when newspapers were beginning to be read by more people, printed materials became an important way to promote products and services. The London Gazette was the first newspaper to set aside a place just for advertising. This was so successful that by the end of the century several companies started businesses for the purpose of making newspaper ads for merchants.
Advertising spread quickly throughout the eighteenth century. Ad writers were starting to pay more attention to the design of the ad text. Everything, from clothes to drinks, was promoted with clever methods such as reception of the firm's name or product words organized in eye-catching patterns, the use of pretty pictures and expressions easy to remember.
Near the end of the nineteenth century, companies that were devoted to the production of ads came to be known as "advertising agencies (廣告商)." The agencies developed new ways to get people to think of themselves as members of a group. Throughout the twentieth century, advertising agencies promoted consumerism (消費(fèi)主義) as a way of life, spreading the belief that people could be happy only if they bought the "right" products.
57. What kind of advertising appeared in the 1400s?

Learning another language isn’t easy, but most people can learn a second language well if they’re willing to put in the necessary time. Here are some practical suggestions for studying effectively, overcoming anxiety, and learning the grammar and skills necessary for success in foreign language classes.
61
Language learning is cumulative(積累): you cannot put it off until the weekend. Study one or two hours for every class hour if you want a good mark.
Distribute(分配)your study time in 15 to 30 minutes period throughout the day
Study a different task each time: 62 , etc. Get an overview during half an hour: spend 10 minutes reviewing conversations, 10 minutes learning new vocabulary, 10 minutes learning new grammar…About 80% of your study time should be spent on recitation(背誦) or practice.
Take part in every class --- even if you aren’t well prepared
63 Learn the grammar and vocabulary outside of class in order to make full use of the class time. Spend a few minutes “warming up” before each class by speaking or reading the language.
Make yourself comfortable in the classroom
Get to know your classmates, so you’ll feel you’re among friends. 64 For example: you explain your goals and fears about the course to your teacher.
Learn grammar if you don’t already know it
Grammar is the skeleton(骨架) and the basic structure of a language, and you must learn it.
Practice for tests by doing what you’ll have to do on the test
If the test will require you to write, then study by writing--including spelling and accents. 65 Ask for practice questions and make up your own test questions. Try to invent changes on patterns and forms. Over learning is also required in tests preparation: study beyond the paints of recognition to mastery.
Develop a good attitude
Have a clear personal reason for taking the class. Set personal goals for what you want to learn. Leave perfectionism at the door; give yourself permission to make mistakes and learn from them.
A. Study every day.
B. Have more practice in listening.
C. vocabulary now, grammar next.
D. If you’re asked to listen, practice listening.
E. Class time is your best opportunity to practice.
F. Visit your teacher during office hours to get acquainted (熟悉的).
G. The more you study, the higher mark you will get.

第二節(jié):概要寫作 (滿分20分)
閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容寫一篇60詞左右的內(nèi)容提要。
Many of us do the revision work alone by shutting ourselves in a room with a book. Shutting yourself away can make you learn to hate studying. This leads to a situation where instead of being able to pay attention to your work, you are troubled by how unfair it is that you must study. When you hate your work, it’s very difficult to make yourself like and do the work. This can be part of a vicious cycle(惡性循環(huán)) that you are caught in an ineffective revision, your poor progress makes you dislike the revision work more.
Just being around other people really helps fight against feelings of loneliness and, thankfully, it’s perfectly possible to work with a partner. We just need to learn how to deal with distractions(使人分心的事物).
It’s not necessary to avoid all people around, just people having nothing do. Studying in the same room with someone who is ironing(熨燙衣服) or working out is perfectly possible. People who are bored and has nothing to do, however, are terrible to work around. They often try to keep others in conversation.
It’s also a good idea to avoid the company(陪伴) of people involved in activities that you like doing very much. Working while sitting next to someone playing video games is much more likely to end with a new high score in the game than a few hours of high quality revision.
If being around others means working in a noisy environment, a pair of headphones and some background music can keep out even noisy children.
When you’re studying for a big exam, it seems like your whole life is taken up with study. Friends and family can lessen feelings of isolation(孤立). And connecting with other people makes us happy, so it’s important not to give that up and to make sure that we take the time be with other people..
