When enjoying children’s birthdays or a long-expected family holiday, you may usually want to keep those important moments in mind with a photograph. But if you’re one of those people who can’t stop snapping photos at an important event, beware—you could end up forgetting it all in a flash.

Experts have warned that the addiction to recording every moment of our lives could be having an adverse effect on our memories.

Maryanne Garry,a New Zealand psychology professor, has been studying how the frequent taking of photos might change childhood memories.“I think the problem is that people are forgetting to experience the moment,”she says.Parents at the park taking one photo after another of their children, for example, are actually paying less attention to what is happening around them. The picture only captures a small part of the total experience. And because parents remember less about these important events, they become less effective in their role as the key people who help children learn how to talk about their experiences. As a result, children’s own childhood memories are reduced.

The idea that we are experiencing less as we record more got psychologist Linda Henkel thinking. She wanted to explore how photographs shape our memories.

Henkel, who researches human memory at Fairfield University in Connecticut, did an experiment by sending groups of students to the university’s art museum. The students observed some objects and photographed others. Then, back at the laboratory, they were given a memory test.Henkel found what she called a “photo-taking effect”.The students remembered fewer of the objects that they had taken photos of,and they remembered fewer details about those objects. She says her students’ memories were worse because they were relying on the camera to remember the details for them.

“As soon as you hit ‘click’ on that camera,it’s as if you’ve outsourced your memory.”she says.

24.What does the word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

  A.A child’s birthday. B.An important event.

C.A valuable photograph. D.A family holiday.

25.How did Henkel develop her theory about the “photo-taking effect”?

  A.By carrying out an experiment.

  B.By giving a questionnaire.

C.By interviewing a group of students.

D.By researching the findings of the others.

26.According to Paragraph 3,why are children’s memories reduced?

A.Flash lights are causing children to forget more things.

B.Parents are not interested in listening to children’s experiences.

C.Children are more interested in taking photos than experiencing.

D.Parents are less effective in helping children discuss their experiences.

27.What’s the purpose of this passage?

A.To introduce a new discovery in taking photos.

B.To discuss the effect of photo-taking on memory.

C.To explain how to use cameras in an effective way.

D.To describe the ways of remembering valuable experiences.

Sindhutai Sapkal, who is 70 now, hides many stories behind her strong personality. She got married at young age to 30-year-old man. Her husband beat her up and threw her out of the house when she was 20 and nine-month pregnant. She gave birth to a baby girl in a cow shelter outside their house in the same day.

“I cut the umbilical cord(臍帶)with a sharp-edged stone lying nearby,” she recalls. The incident deeply affected her and she thought of committing suicide, but gave up that thought and started begging at railway platforms for food to look after her daughter.

As she spent more time begging, she realized that there are many orphans and children abandoned by their parents. Having faced the difficulties herself, she could feel their pain and she decided to adopt them. She started begging more earnestly in order to feed the many children that she had adopted.

She has adopted over 1,400orphans, helped them get an education, got them married and supported them to settle down in life. She treats them as her own and some of them are now lawyers, doctors and engineers.

Sindhutai with her love and compassion has gathered a huge family of 207 sons-in-law, 36 daughters-in-law and over 1,000 grandchildren. Till date, she continues to fight for the next meal. She doesn’t take support from anyone but still give speeches to earn her daily bread and butter.

For her courage and compassion she has received over 500 awards. Whatever amount she received as awards, she used it to construct homes for her children.

The unusual life of Sindhutai is an inspiration for all of us. Even after facing so many hardships, she stood tall and made her way into everyone’s heart. She proved that if you’re determined to do something, nothing can stop you from changing the lives of thousands of people around you. We salute this brave lady!

  28. What prevented Sindhytai Sapkal killing herself?

  A. The love from her daughter. B. Her responsibility for her kid.

  C. The support from strangers. D. Her positive attitude towards life.

Do you hear that birds of a feather flock together? It certainly appears that they do. We are likely to hang around with individuals who are similar to ourselves. Poor people like to surround themselves with other poor people, and rich people with other rich people. Intelligent people associate with like-minded people, and artists typically seek out other artists.

It appears that we all have comfort zones we attempt to stay within. Very stressed and poor people don’t feel comfortable associating with rich people. We owe it to each other to be successful because success breeds more success. And if we are not feeling successful, looking at who we have as friends and associates can tell us and others a lot about ourselves and why. The longer we associate with a group of individuals, the more our thinking processes become like theirs.

A few years ago, a doctor friend of mine began associating with a new group of people. At the time, he had a successful practice and a positive and grateful attitude to life. However, within the first six months of his association with these individuals, his attitude and goals changed , he was angry at how things were and was dissatisfied with those who’d become his opposition. He became very stubborn. As a result his practice dropped in quality of service. His facial expressions often showed anger and stress.

After about two years of association with this group, he learned some valuable lessons. He realized that always focusing on problems or being dissatisfied with others doesn’t lead to a rewarding life, nor does it solve as many problems as it creates. He decided that he’d rather get back into serving his patients.

This doctor put his heart and soul into his practice, and his life changed again. He began to attract people who focused on solutions instead of problems. His success was now more obvious than his stress - his achievement more obvious than his frustration.

Whom we hang out with does make a difference. The old saying “If you want to soar (翱翔) with the eagles, don’t flock with the turkeys.” has a point.

  32. What does the underlined part “birds of a feather flock together” in Paragraph 1 mean?

  A. Birds like to take a risk to fly high in the sky.

  B. Birds are more likely to fly together than other creatures.

  C. People are more likely to have different attitudes to life.

  D. People of the same kind are found together.

  33. We can infer from the passage that the individuals the doctor hung out with were ________.

  A. stressed B. successful C. patient D. rich

  34. The author uses the old saying in the last paragraph to ________.

  A. show his great literary talent B. make his article more persuasive

  C. raise another similar question D. suggest the end of his article

  35. The author uses the doctor’s example to prove that ________.

  A. bad luck never comes alone B. success breeds more success

  C. someone has no control over his own life D. people are likely to become like those who they associate with

Studying longer does not necessarily mean studying better. 36 Below are some great ways of learning as much as you can without getting too stressed.

Find the right place to study.

The first thing you need to do is avoid distractions(分散注意力的事物) while studying. 37 You should keep away from television sets and phone calls. Get all of your study materials together, so you will not be interrupted in the middle of your session.

Break down the tasks into smaller parts.

When you have gotten everything ready, list the items you need to study, and arrange them across several hours or days, depending on how big your load is. As a general rule, assign(分配) at least one hour to each subject. 38 By doing this, you will be able to know more easily how long you need for each topic.

  Schedule study breaks.

When you have listed all of your tasks and made a schedule, you should arrange(安排)study breaks. 39 This will give your eyes some time to rest, and yourself a chance to go to the bathroom or have some coffee. Scheduled breaks will reduce the need for you to interrupt yourself to the lowest level during the study session.

Put your tasks in the order of importance.

40 Just in case you run out of time to study, or if you think you do not have enough time to cover all topics, you should study in an order.

  A. Learn to arrange the subjects in the order of importance.

  B. Each break may take about 15 minutes every two hours.

  C. This means going to one place that will give you peace and quiet.

  D. The key to efficient studying is following the schedule strictly.

  E. You can find a way to test your knowledge by having a study partner.

  F. If you have a broad subject, you will need to break it down into smaller parts.

  G. To make the best use of your time, you need to learn how to study efficiently(高效地).
