Get Insurance
Make sure that you get right travel insurance for your trip. What you get covered depends on your own values, but there is a lot out there to consider. Medical, lost luggage, the list goes on. Another thing to look into is where to get your insurance from. Banks and other institutions(機(jī)構(gòu))can provide it, but so can credit cards, so check and see if you may already be covered.
Online Booking
There’re a lot of online booking sites you can check out to book your vacation. Because there is so much competition, you can often get good deals on packages. This is especially true if you are flexible on dates. Expedia.com is one website that can be trusted to get a good deal. One tip- if you find a deal that is too good to be sure, do a search on the company to make sure it is a legal offer.
Packing
Pack clothes that you can dress up or dress down. Also, very important- make sure you bring good shoes for your destination.
Diary
Your vacation is going to be filled with amazing experiences that will be so vivid at the time, but will slowly disappear after you return home. Try to keep a diary at regular intervals to think back your experiences. This is the best gift you can give yourself.

I wanted to share something that put a smile on my face this morning.
Last week while I was at work, one of my coworkers twisted her wrist while lifting something that might have been too heavy for her. This coworker of mine speaks little English and my Spanish is also poor. But we have never had a problem communicating.
When I ran into her soon after her injury, I took a look and I knew that a simple first aid was in order. With me being an athlete, I knew that a simple procedure called 'RICE' (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation), was what she needed until she was able to get to the doctor. With little understanding of what I was doing, she trusted that I meant to help. So she handed me her arm and I wrapped it up before she left to see her doctor.
Today she came up to me while I was getting my breakfast; she hugged me and patted me on the back. She simply said “thank you for taking care of my arm when I got hurt”. I had forgotten about the thing already. She went on to tell me that her doctor told her putting ice on her injury was a good thing but she would never have known to do.
As she was telling me this, I saw how my act of kindness had had an effect on her. With me just taking a minute out of my day to help her, I made a friend. This time I opened my arms and hugged her and I was thankful to have such a moment because you see, this lady has served me breakfast every day for the last four years.
So reader, I reach out to you today and encourage you to pass on the kindness. You never know what a difference a simple act of kindness makes to a person.
25. Why did the writer know how to give first aid to her coworker?
A. Because she was once a doctor. B. Because she was once an athlete.
C. Because she had the same experience. D. Because she once studied medicine.
26. What did the writer and her coworker both think of the act of the writer?
A. Thankful. B. Moved. C. Amazing. D. Fortunate.
27. Where do you think the story is probably from?
A. A TV program. B. A radio program. C. A Blog. D. A magazine.

At age 13, great jazz musician Thelonious Monk ran into trouble at Harlem's Apollo Theater. The reason: he was too good. He was, as they say, a “natural,” and by that point had won the Apollo’s amateur competition so many times that he was banned from re-entering. To be sure, Monk practiced, a lot actually. But two new studies suggest that he likely had plenty of help from his genes.
A 1993 study by Ericsson and colleagues found that by age 20talented musicians had practiced for an average of 10,000 hours, concluding that differences in skill are not “due to innate(天生的)talent.” Author Malcolm Gladwell lent this idea some weight in his 2008 book “Outliers.” Gladwell writes that greatness requires an enormous time investment and cites the “10,000-Hour Rule” as a major key to success in various pursuits from music (The Beatles) to software supremacy (Bill Gates).
However, new research led by psychology professor David Z. Hambrick suggests that, unfortunately for many of us, success isn’t exclusively(唯一地)a product of determination — that despite even the most hermitic(全封閉的)practice routine, our genes might still leave greatness out of reach.
Hambrick’s data show that the genetic influence on musical success was far larger in those who practiced more. Hambrick explains, “People have various genetically determined basic abilities, or talents, thatmakethem better or worse at certain skills, but that can be developed through environmental influences. Hence Hambrick says: “If you want to be a better musician, practice! If you want to be a better golfer, practice!”
28. What was the trouble Thelonious Monk ran into?
A. He couldn’t get enough help. B. He had to practise a lot.
C. He won too many competitions. D. He was prohibited from entering again.
29. The 1993 study by Ericsson and colleagues suggested that ______.
A. a talented musician practices 500 hours a year
B. success calls for a quantity of time
C. environmental influences make no difference to skills
D. hard work must bring about success
30. We can infer from the third paragraph that _____.
A. many of us are not fortunate
B. success is the only consequence of determination
C. genes play a more important part than practice in greatness
D. practice plays as important a part as genes in greatness
31. What may be the best title for the passage?
A. What Do Great Musicians Have In Common? B. What Is the Secret of Success?
C. How to Do Research D. How to Be Perfect

A good piece of writing holds your attention. It flows smoothly and everything makes sense. It’s interesting and a pleasure to read.
Great writing, on the other hand, doesn’t just hold your attention; it commands your attention.
You become lost in it. You can’t put it down, and when you do, you want to read it all over again.
The question is, how do we define great writing?
Some would say that every word of great writing is carefully chosen, every sentence is thoughtfully constructed, and every paragraph is filled with meaning and purpose. If you’ve ever admired a superbly written sentence, you’ve experienced this kind of writing.
Others would say that what matters most isn’t the writing but what’s being said. As long as the story or ideas are communicated clearly and as long as they are attractive and interesting, who cares how super the sentences are? A great story doesn’t need to use word impressively; it just needs to carry us off to another world.
So, do we identify great writing by the way words are conveyed clearly? Does story do better than beautiful writing? Or do we want it all?
Personally, I appreciate both types of writing, but I tend to look for beautiful turns of phrase, interesting images, and brilliant word choices when I’m reading poetry. When I read a poem, I want to be carried away by the poet’s style. I want to stop and read the same line again and again. I want to have great respect for how writers can make creative changes to language. I don’t necessarily care what the poem is about. In fact, it may not be about anything. If it’s beautifully written, I will appreciate it.
32. What is mainly talked about in the second paragraph?
A. How to write good writing . B. What is great writing?
C. What is good writing? D. How to write great writing.
33. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Every word of great writing must be carefully chosen.
B. Great writing should be attractive and interesting.
C. People care how super the sentences are.
D. People have a different opinion of great writing.
34. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The author likes any kind of writing.
B. The author’s favourite is poetry.
C. The author is really into the poet’s style.
D. The author cares much about what a poem conveys .
35. After reading the passage, we can know ____.
A. the difference between good writing and great writing
B. good writing is better than great writing
C. good writing is worse than great writing
D. good writing is as good as great writing

How to Arrange Travel
Arranging travel can be a challenging task, especially if you have never done it. 36 A good starting point is deciding where you'd like to go, and how much you'd like to spend.
Decide on a destination.
Which state or country would you like to visit? Do you want to travel to a warm climate or a cold climate? Do you like seeing historical sights, walking through museums, lying on a sunny beach, get a thrill at an amusement park, walk or hike beautiful landscapes... 37
Decide when you want to travel.
Do you want to travel during the winter, spring, summer or fall? Destinations, such as Las Vegas and Miami can be more expensive to visit during the winter months. A trip to Disney World in early January can be the most economical time to visit the amusement park. 38
39 Will you drive, fly or ride the train to your destination? Consider the total costs of transportation. Check fares on-line to get an idea of your travel costs and decide if it falls within your budget.
Choose a hotel.
What type of hotel do you prefer, budget or four-star? How many rooms will you need? Do you need a non-smoking room? 40 Orbitz.com, Expedia.com and Hotels.com are three popular choices, but there are many more.
A. Make your reservations.
B. Not sure how to begin?
C. Choose your mode of transportation.
D. Use these sites to check availability and compare rates.
E. The choices are endless, but they can only be made by you.
F. There are countless travel web sites to assist you in making these choices.
