“How can I learn English well?” This is a question many students ask. In my opinion, the most effective way is to learn lessons by heart. If you can recite the text and write it out, you’ve learned it fairly well. And if you can tell, in your own words, what the lessons says you’re a very successful learner indeed. Your English will be quite perfect.
This is a difficult task. However, if you try to learn by heart only part of each lesson, you’ll find it not so hard as you might have thought.
Learning this way, you will make rapid progress. Of course, writing is also necessary. It helps you a lot on our way to success in English.
Equally important is to fell the language. You should be able to laugh at jokes and be shocked at bad news. When using English, try to forget your mother tongue. Instead of being helping you, your own language gets in your way. So, never try to see English through translation.

to forget your own native language
to translate everything into your own language.
to memorize the English words and grammatical rules

A. translation’s disadvantagesB. different ways of learning English
C. the help of the English jokesD. the progress to make

On Midsummer’s Eve, which was a Saturday, Mr. Jones went into Willington and got so drunk at the Red Lion that he did not come back till midday on Sunday. The men had milked the cows in the early morning and then had gone hunting for rabbits, without feeding the animals. When Mr. Jones came back he immediately went to sleep on the living-room sofa, with the “News of the world” covered his face, so that when evening came, the animals were still not fed. At last, they could not stand any longer. One of the cows broke into the door of the storehouse with her horns(角) and all the animals began to help themselves to the grains(糧食). It was just then that Jones woke up. The next moment he and his four men were in the storehouse with whips(鞭子) in their hands, whipping in all directions. This was more than the hungry animals could bear. Together, though nothing of the kind had been planned before hand, they jumped upon their masters. Jones and his men suddenly found themselves being stuck with the horns and kicked from all sides. The situation was quite out of their control. They had never seen animals act like this before, and this sudden uprising(反抗) of animals which they were used to beating and whipping just as they liked, frightened them. After only a moment or two they gave up trying to defend themselves. A minute later the five of them were in full fright down the road, with the angry animals running after them joyfully.

Here are two cars that may some day take the place of today’s automobiles. If everyone drives such a car in the future, there will be less pollution in the air. There will also be more parking space in the cities, and the streets will be less crowed. Three such cars can fit in the space now needed for one car of the usual size.
The little cars will cost much less to own and to drive. Driving will be safer, too, and these little cars can go only 65 kilometers per hour.
The cars of the future will be fine for getting around a city, but they will not be useful for long trips. If the car is powered by electricity, it will have two batteries-one battery for the motor and one for the horn(喇叭), signals(信號(hào)燈), and so on. Little cars which are powered by gas will go 450 kilometers before needing to stop for more gas.
If big cars are still used along with the small ones, two sets roads will be needed in the future. Some roads will be used for the big, fast cars, and the other roads will be needed for the small, slower ones in the future..
66. The car of tomorrow will be ___as large ad today’s?
one secondB. one thirdC. three timesD. twice

70. The best title for the passage might be________.

How to Drive Small Cars
Cars for Tomorrow

America has been experiencing the longest economic increase in its history. Incomes have risen , unemployment has fallen , and cities as New York are bursting with new office buildings .
But just a short walk from Manhattan’s skyscrapers , Gorge Brown sits on the sidewalk , cooking a lunch of rice and bits of fish over a can of cooking fuel . He is homeless —one of the 2.3 million people in the US who end up on the street . During the day , Brown collects aluminum cans and sells them for five cents a piece. At night, he sleeps on the street about eight or nine years, something like that,” said the 62-year-old former construction worker.
Brown admits he’s had problem with alcohol and had smoked cocaine. But he says he still wants a more stable housing arrangement. He could afford it just with the money he earns by collecting cans and small pieces of metal, if only truly low-income housing were available.
However, he sees no hope of finding a affordable housing in New York. With the strong economy and unemployment down, beautiful housing is being built to meet the end.
One of the side effects of the strong economy is that rents have been going up. A US report shows rents in New York city rose more than 27 per cent between 1984 and 1999, from US$ 549 to US 0 a month. So, what the majority of people who experience homelessness really need is just some affordable housing help. However, few projects have been built for the poor.
Brown, the homeless New Yorker, says he has a daughter who lives in the city but he seldom sees her. She is angry about his drinking and won’t allow it in her house.
Smiling, he says he has seven grandchildren whom he’d like to see more often.
