Imagine the driest, hottest place in North America suddenly being covered with thousands of bright-yellow wild flowers. That is exactly what is happening now in Death Valley National Park in California. The area is experiencing a rare super bloom(開(kāi)花),attracting tourists from all over the world to have a look at the sea of golden flowers.

The park is a difficult place for flowers to grow. It holds the world record for the hottest temperature ever recorded: 134 degrees Fahrenheit, set on July 10, 1913. On average, Death Valley receives 2 inches of rainfall per year. Sometimes, it gets no rain at all. This season, however, was different. Last month, Death Valley got three rainstorms. This caused the growth of millions of wild flower seeds that had been dormant(休眠的)in the ground.

This kind of super bloom only happens about once every ten years. Death Valley last had a bloom this size in 2005, and the one before that happened in 1998. During the 2005 bloom, flowers that had never been seen before in the area began to blossom, suggesting that the seeds had been dormant for years.

This year, the park's most abundant wild flower is the desert gold, a large, bright-yellow, daisylike bloom. Its stems are growing about waist high, with the flowers covering hillsides and wide areas of the valley floor. Other blooming flowers include the gravel ghost, a small white flower that looks like it is floating above the ground because its stem is so thin, and different kinds of desert primrose.

The colorful attraction won't extend much longer, though. As temperatures rise over the next few weeks, the flowers will begin to fade.

  21. The super bloom took place in Death Valley this year mainly because_______.

  A. the temperature was low

  B. it received more rain than usual

  C. specialists helped the flowers grow

  D. many wild flower seeds were brought there

  22. In this year's super bloom, Death Valley has large quantities of________.

  A. the daisy

  B. the gravel ghost

  C. the desert gold

  D. the desert primrose

  23. What does the underlined word "extend" in the last paragraph mean?

  A. Last.

  B. Reduce

  C. Change.

  D. Disappear.[:]

  24. What is the text mainly about?

  A. The weather in Death Valley.

  B. The development of Death Valley.

  C. New species in Death Valley.

  D. A super bloom in Death Valley.

I started a gratitude jar project in December, 2015. I would write down the things that I'm grateful for, bank them in my jar until the end of 2016, and then read through those little notes.

My Gratitude Project moved along smoothly through most of January, a time when I coasted on calm waters. Then life happened as it always does. At the end of January, our family's beloved dog Midnite that we rescued 12 years ago suddenly grew ill. Then a few days later, he passed away.

Feeling sad about the loss of a pet was new to me. Midnite was my first dog. I was and am still heartbroken. About a week after Midnite died, I sat down at my desk with the jar in view and willed myself to come up with something to put in the jar. Then something came to my mind. I was grateful for 12 years with Midnite, the best dog ever. And I wrote it down.

After that, the memories and stories about my Midnite flowed----some funny, some embarrassing, and some that brought tears to my eyes. My Midnite was many things and I am grateful for all of them: sweet, loving, good-natured, smart, loyal, a lover of walks, happy to know everyone, tail wagging with joy and larger-than-life in every way. I will always miss him and be forever grateful that in the end our dog rescued us.

As for my gratitude jar, in less than two months my bright idea has taught me something important: when things get tough, the ability to dig out some good can make us feel much better.

25.What did the author decide to write about and put in her jar?

  A. Bills from the bank.

  B. Things to be thankful for.

  C. People who have helped her.

  D. All the sad things in her life.

  26. The underlined part in Paragraph 2 means in most of January the author ______.

  A. lived in a coastal city

  B. lived a very peaceful life

  C. spent a lot of time swimming

  D. experienced something terrible

  27. How did the author react seeing the jar after Midnite's death?

  A. She wrote down her sadness.

  B. She totally forgot Midnite's death.

  C. She tried to concentrate on her work.

  D. She wanted to write the good things about him

  28. Where is the text most probably taken from?

  A. A blog.

  B. A dictionary.

  C. A brochure.

  D. A guidebook.

  C

Imagine a situation where your furniture flies, responding to your needs. You could have a desk that flies away when it feels you're over-working, or a remote control that floats over when you think you've lost it.

Harshit Agrawal and Sang-Won Leigh, two researchers from the MIT Media Lab's Fluid Interfaces Group, are exploring how to make everyday objects transform into flying smart agents. "We really look at this as a way of making objects kind enough to communicate with us. In the sense that they somehow know what you are doing, so they might prevent you from doing something wrong," Agrawal said.

To power the flying furniture, the pair use a camera to track everything in the room, which receives commands from the computer. The computer knows where the furniture wants to go by tracking where the person is. Then researchers feed the data from the computer to the furniture so that it can move smoothly to the required position.

The project features furniture acting as flying tables that adjust to your height and fly away once you have finished your task. They also have a lampshade(燈罩)that hovers above you, focusing light on where you need it when you are reading a book in the dark.

Currently, the researchers face a major challenge. The flying furniture has no ability to support the heavy tabletop, so the researchers turn to a paper tabletop. They find, however, that if they place the paper tabletop directly on the top, it blocks airflow. To solve this problem, they have made the distance between the base and the paper tabletop greater. Besides, it's necessary to feed the furniture using a regular power supply, rather than a power socket插座)

Agrawal notes that they will continue to focus on the development of flying objects. Finally, they are trying to improve the furniture in everyday use so that they surpass(優(yōu)于)the traditional stable objects, and cooperate with their owners better.

  29. The opening paragraph mainly intends to_______.

  A. advertise a new type of furniture

  B. attract readers' interest in the subject

  C. appeal to readers to buy the furniture

  D. show furniture is important in our daily life

  30. What do we know about the project?

  A. It was started by Harshit Agrawal alone.

  B. It aims at making objects chat with people.

  C. It may help you finish your task in the future.

  D. A camera is used to connect the computer with the furniture.

  31. What can we infer from the text?

  A. It's better for the furniture to remain still.

  B. The flying equipment is dangerous to people.

  C. Researchers want to make daily objects more convenient.

  D. Researchers will give up the study about flying objects.

  D

Road traffic crashes kill 1.25 million people each year worldwide. The statistics are part of the "Global Status Report on Road Safety 2015". The report surveyed 180 countries, and it shows the number of annual deaths from traffic crashes is stabilizing(穩(wěn)定). And that is good news as the number of motor vehicles grows worldwide. But the data also show that road crashes are the No. 1 cause of death among young people aged 15 to 29. Young adults around the world are the worst driving risks. Even in the U.S., drivers aged 15 to 24 account for about 30 percent of all driving-related accidents. But the World Health Organization (WHO) says they are preventable.

The WHO report also finds a big gap in road safety and deaths between poor and rich countries. Poor countries have only 54 percent of the world's vehicles. But those countries have some of the worst safety statistics in the report "Africa has only two percent of the world's vehicles, but has the highest death rate on the road" says Etienne Krug, the head of the WHO Department of Non-communicable Diseases. Sweden, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom are leaders in preventing traffic deaths.

Stronger road safety laws and stricter vehicle safety requirements in developing countries would prevent many accidents. Laws can quickly influence driving behavior. In only three years, 17 countries became safer by putting tougher road safety laws into effect. Some of those laws include banning drunk driving, requiring cyclists and motorcycle drivers to wear helmets and making safety belts mandatory(強(qiáng)制性的)in all vehicles. Good injury care after a crash can cut、 the number of deaths from road injuries in half. Of course, there are also many other ways to make roads safer.

  32. The underlined word "they" in paragraph 1 probably refers to____.

  A. motor vehicles

  B. the statistics

  C. traffic crashes

  D. young drivers

  33. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?

  A. People in developed countries are very skilled at driving.

  B. Africa has to take some measures to prevent traffic deaths.

  C. The Netherlands has done the best in avoiding traffic accidents.

  D. Poor countries need to buy fewer cars to reduce traffic accidents.

  34. What is most likely to be talked about in the paragraph following the text?

  A. More ways to make roads safer.

  B. Suggestions on good injury care.

  C. The number of deaths from accidents.

  D. Other road safety laws in poor countries.

  35. The text is mainly about_____.

  A. the danger of driving alone

  B. the No. 1 killer among the youth

  C. the ways to avoid road accidents

  D. the importance of helmets in driving cars

Everybody wants to get their driver's license on the first try. Unfortunately, 50% of the people that take the driving test cannot pass for the first time. 36 If you are worried that you might not pass, you need to practice every day. Besides, you should study and take practice tests. Here are a few driving tips to help you get started:

As with anything, the more you practice, the more comfortable you will be. Practice driving with a responsible adult. Check out Google Earth to get a good view of the testing site. 37 Practice until you know the testing routes like the back of your hand.

38 Driver's handbook is boring to read, but if you look on the Internet, you can find some fun and interactive(互動(dòng)的)guides, which include how-to videos and practice tests.

The more you practice and learn, the more confident you will be. Confidence is essential if you want to pass your driving test! You'll be less likely to feel nervous. You don't want to rely on the regular guides given to you.

39 No matter how well you prepare yourself , you still might be on edge. Make sure you get plenty of sleep the night before so that you feel refreshed during the test. Work out the night before to get a good sleep and feel less stressful in the morning.

40 Ask them what you can expect. Ask them what their examiner was like. If the examiner sounds scary, ask your friends what mistakes they made so that you can avoid making them and ending up with the same scary examiner.

If you follow these driving test tips, you should be able to pass your exam on the first try! Good luck!

  A. Do your careful research before taking the test.

  B. Driving around the testing area every singe day.

  C. That's really bad news for those who have to take the test.

  D. Do you have any friends who recently took their road tests?

  E. Either they're not well prepared or they're simply too nervous.

  F. There's no guarantee that you won't feel nervous on the big day.

  書(shū)面表達(dá)

  Dear editor,

The kid's words shocked me deeply. Many students are highly dependent on their phones, overlooking the importance of study. However, as far as I am concerned, the phones play an important but not absolutely essential role in students’ education.

There is no doubt that mobile phones have brought much convenience, but we are not supposed to rely too much on them in the process of study. In the first place, we should have a good command of knowledge on our own to cope with various situations. In the second place, it is our personal knowledge that promotes the development of phones.

All in all, we should properly balance the relationship between phones and study. Only in this way can we benefit most from our learning process.

  Yours,

  Li Hua
